Well I've been up here in North Dakota for about two months now and I'm finally getting a taste of what cold really is. The high today was negative 20, with 20-30 mph winds. Luckily I only had to work a half day. Tonight its supposed to get down to negative 30 with a wind chill of around negative 60 and more of the same tomorrow... I don't think I've ever missed Texas so much.

Most people head south for the winter

    Why did you move there?

Haha yeah the guy that hired me said alot of people had just left to go home for the winter.. but I came here for a job.. I've been dating my old lady for about 12 years now on and off and want to ask her to marry me but I couldn't let myself do that knowing I couldn't take care of her with the job I had back home. So i got an opportunity to come up here and get some experience and make some money and I jumped on it.

I have lived in MN on and off over the years. I know those winters and don't miss them.

I was in Greeley, CO for three weeks before Christmas. That first week the high was -5º (during the day) and we work outside.

I feel for you but what are you gonna do?

That wind makes all the difference in the world. 15-20 degrees with sunshine and no wind isn't bad. Gun metal grey sky and 30 mph wind and it's miserable.

Stay warm up there! My part of the midwest I left behind has a forecast of -19 (air temp) tonight!

I'll send you these to remind you of the Southland.

I'm not sure you could pay me enough to live in -60 wind chill unless I got to dress like an astronaut. If this is your stepping stone to a better life for you and your girl, my hats off to you. But I will say your definition of better is way different than mine.

Soon as she could she moved down here and never went back!

I lived way up north (not in Alaska) and it's just a different kind of life. Freezing up there for up to 6 months a year is no fun and the heat 6 months down here is no fun.

N Dakota is especially cold and windy though even for upper midwest standards.

I passed a place in the upper peninsula of Michigan one time in the summer (I think it was near Iron Mountain or Ishpeming don't ya know?) and they had a sign on the side of the road for total snowfall for last year. I believe it was 28 feet tall!

I miss ND until I remember how cold it is... The coldest I remember was -38 with around a 75 windchill. Misery.

LOTS of money floating through that state right now...

ah winter days lol. I remember when I was driving for TMC. I had to wait at the lumbermill close to Shell Lake, WI to pick up a load of OSB board until the next morning. Nothing like being in the middle of nowhere and the temp was -30 (actual temp) and not a decent place to eat for miles.

Wouldn't mind taking a Frac job up north. Long as I had a place to live I'm here for the money not the weather.

I'd take cold over heat any day. You can always put more clothes on in the cold. You can't get any more naked than naked in the heat. I'd move back home to Montana in a heartbeat.

I worked last winter in Williston, ND. Rain gear is your friend. Put a rain slicker on over your insulated coveralls, and it will cut the wind.

Da yoopers are special folks. It takes a certain kind of crazy to stay on the upper peninsula for the winter. Midsummer, though - Mercy, it's beautiful. And sometimes a cudighi is just something you crave.

If I lived up there, I'd cocoon for the winter and go nuts. After the thaw they'd likely find my body sprawled across a pile of empty brandy bottles. I could never do it. But it's a nice place to visit at the right time of year.
