I'd like to hear you say that again should you ever be in a position such as theirs, either to help or be helped.

Helping is great but if he is really just plain going to pay the cost of her treatment then he is a nut. He could right now still buy insurance for her because there is the no denial for pre existing conditions but is he? If she just works less most of the bills would be covered by medicaid and he can just help with expenses which wouldn't bankrupt him. He doesn't need to sell his place to help and there is no reason that he has to pay for the whole treatment which is what they seem to be trying to suggest. Heck she also doesn't need help to get treatment. We don't without treatment because of a persons lack of ability to pay so it's not to save her life. She would get the treatment anyway. Personally I think the reporter most likely screwed up the story so who knows whats up but if the facts are as described it's stupid.

While the original story makes me feel good and gives me hope for mankind, there is some logic to what bones said in his second post. If it is a successful restaurant, and it sounds like it is, it probably does make more financial sense to keep it and just pay for her insurance, which would likely be a deductable expense for the restaurant. But since the owner wants to get out anyway, what he is doing is very noble.

That if she has no income that medicaid will pay? That is a fact. That she can get treatment regardless? That also is a fact. That insurance can be bought that has to cover her even with pre existing conditions? That is a fact. That he doesn't need to sell the business to provide the girl with help? I'll give you that is not what I would call a fact but the likelihood of my being wrong is so small it's insignificant. So what are you work up about?

Wow, all this "he's a nut" stuff yet only taking into account one side of the issue. All you're seeing is the side of somebody paying the medical bills. You are ignoring this:

De Beyer said he has owned the restaurant for 17 years and believes it's worth as much as $2 million. He also wants to sell the business to spend more time with his wife and two children.
He's tried to sell the restaurant before, and once turned down an offer for $1.3 million.

Perhaps this was perfect timing all around for this one thing to take place. She needed help and he felt it was the right time to get out of the restaurant business.

Just say "what a great getsure" and quit runnning down what others do because it wasn't good enough for you. Haven't seen anyone else pitch in and send money.

Who said it wasn't good enough? If someone is using cases of bottled water to put out a fire next door and get congratulated for doing so I will point out the hose that was right there next to him. That being said I have a feeling it was the reporter that screwed the story up and not this guy who is helping the girl.

2 Million wont cover it if she has surgery to remove the brain tumor. I know when mine was removed it cost over 4.5 Million. The surgery by itself was over 2.5 Million and then there was medication, hospital stay, doctor fees, etc, etc and that was at a teaching hospital so it would have been more expensive if it wasnt done by a university hospital.. But it is still a good gesture.

Wow. Good to see a few folks still like to go a little overboard. What I read was

So De Beyer has decided to sell his family's 6,000 square foot restaurant and donate money to Mathis.

Doesn't say he's donating all the money to her. Maybe he's going to just donate enough to buy her insurance. (As the boss, he can't just buy insurance for one employee and not the others). Maybe he's going to give her more, or maybe he's only going to donate $100.

And now you are just trolling, making a comment purely and totally to insult and get a reaction. The story is stupid on it's face, which I attribute to the reporter and not the people mentioned, being written to imply that the girl would not receive treatment and die without this help and the individual selling the business will just be slapping down a big check to cover all the costs at great personal sacrifice requiring him to sell his business to afford to be able to aid this girl. That is not the case. Great that you find the idea of an uplifting story means they should ignore reality and basic rules of journalism, but that doesn't hold as some universal truth.
