I was looking with a friend of mine for a Ar-15 type. Carter's had a dpms one for 770.00. We talked back n forth about getting a better deal since bud's has it for 600 ish and another local shop had it for 650.

It all started when we asked for a price match. Here are several emails/facebook posts from them

carters: we don't want to be rude but do you really expect we would react any different when you specifically target our ad with our competition?? Seriously!!!"

carters: we have millions of dollars more in Inventory and have been in business for more than 50 years? Professionalism and ethics are important not just in business but in life!!!"

carters: Seriously, we ask ask kindly to do the right thing and be ethical and you respond with more of the same...."

I basically responded saying be ethical and dont try to rip off people

carters: Carter's Country Guns & Ammo wrote: "screw people, seriously do you have any idea of reality of things. Do you have any idea who broke open the fast and furious debacle and spent millions of dollars doing so, any idea who flies wounded warriors to the ranch in south texas opening day every darn year and gives them rifles, cammo, the hunt, processing taxidermy and everything else free, do you know who gives thousands of dollars in scholarships to youth interested in outdoors or wildlife management or Ag business every year and has for well over a decade. DO you know what range lest vets shoot for free every first tuesday of the month and has for years and years. Mr Carter, a Force Recon marine in business for over 50 years is who. He fights not for business but for the 2nd amendment and for all our rights and continues to do so tirelessly and with a passion that is far greater than you can imagine. He bled for this country, spends huge money promoting gun rights and does it for one reason only he loves our country and our rights and will never stop fighting for those. He is a milionaire who spends more in helping all gun owners and sellers than most gun stores sell in a year and he does that year after year after year and he is such a humble and decent man that he does not want anyone to publicize that. Hell I know that much about what he does because I know him and the family but he tells no one and doesnt want that to even be known. I was a US Army soldier for ten years and I would take him to war with me any time any where because he is honest, hard working and decent and ethical plus what most men would stive to be, a self made man who served all of us as a merchant marine and then a marine in hard combat. Obvioulsy you have no idea what decency is when you post something like this on a page that doesnt push ads nearly as hard as we push the 2nd amendment, respect for our men and women in the armed forces and patriotism."

Fun when folks are flushed out who they really are like that.

Carters country is a hunter focused fuddy duddy place where folks with more money than brains go and I don't see them changing.

Do you have any idea who tried to ban Gun shows in Houston? (Bill Carter)

Do you have any idea who was voluntarily working with the DPS reporting off book gun purchases of individuals placing them under scrutiny?

Do you have any idea who charged more at their ranges when they saw a "Tactical Rifle"?

Do you have any idea who had employees asking LEOs to disarm in their store when they walked in?

I really could go on, those are all I remember off the cuff.

The attempt to ban gun shows is true. Seems it was a try cut out the competition. Show prices these days tell me show sellers just started selling at carter prices. They are always nice at carters anyway

    profound thinking about stuff

+1, a lot of the same stuff I remember.

They were one of the last stores in Houston to get into MSRs, well until the potential for profit overwhelmed their hunting mentality. Reminds me of Jim Zumbo and those type of people's thought processes.

I have found that at the cartes in stafford that if you mention wrestling fan and they will bend over backwards to help. Well the ones that are not to fat to bend..Just saying. The fact that I drive right by it on my way home from work matters.

Yeah. Never had problems at the Sugar Land store either. Their prices are a little higher than gun show prices but that's expected. They still sell .22LR at normal prices, albeit limit 1 box per customer.

Must be just the internet guys acting up.

As for ARs just get a Colt or DD or DPMS if that's what you really want for a reasonable price from one of the many vendors at the gun shows that happens just about every other week. No sweat, no drama.

Bought my amsec safe there 1+yr ago, compared to Inet they were comparable.

Still buy 22, drop by ever other day

Not what I calm stellar service but ain't complaining.

I asked about matching inet pricing on guns, they said NO, ok ordered it online next day. No biggie if they don't want to match, move on, no need to try and convince them.

Devils Advocate; Interesting, what with no context or quotes from the OP. If you can buy guns elsewhere for a price that better suits you why would you even ask for a price match?

Something tells me there is more backstory here.

I see this kind of thing all the time ... people claim to have been "ripped off" when all that occurred is a buyer or seller backed out, the price was too high at the most convenient outlet or some similar instance.

Maybe I'm skewed, but to me "ripped off" means I have given some one something of value and got nothing in return.

I have always been treated well at the Spring location. I will not condemn Carters any more than I already do, without reading the full exchange between the OP and Carters.

Because it's right there, available for pre-purchase inspection with no waiting for delivery. If the tax and shipping are a wash, asking for a price match is completely reasonable.

It's also completely reasonable to expect that a stocking LGS must charge a few bucks more and that they're worth it.

It's not, however, reasonable for a store to react rudely when asked.

Remember back when they refused to carry Glocks and told everybody that Glocks were unsafe plastic trash? They persisted in that nonsense for a long, long time.

People should post up their Carter's horror stories. I'm sure there are plenty. Or do we need another thread for that?
