We hear about the bad pull overs when folks are CHL, so how about a good one for a change. Got pulled over two weeks ago by a State Trooper for speeding. I behaved the way your supposed to with hands on the wheel and informed the trooper I had a CHL and weapon on me, and just asked if he wanted to secure it. He asked where it was, it was on me, and then I informed him my license was in the back pocket and asked him if it was okay to reach for it. He consented, stepped back to watch me and I got my wallet and put my hands back on the wheel. He did his paper work thing in his car and came back with a warning. All hunky dorey from there. He was a professional through out the stop. I wish I had kept the paper work so I could have written to his boss.

    Good!

As an Instructor, up until Sept of last year I saw 40+ renewal students a month. The overwhelming majority of LE contacts reported by my students were just like yours.

    Mine have been as well.

Seems like we see a number of CHL holders posting about good DPS stops. I know that I was stopped by a town cop south of the DFW area and it couldn't have been more professional. It may be that following the proper protocol when you're stopped and carrying helps to keep everything cool.

It's always entertaining to post up the crappy work done by bad officers, but the reality is that the good LEOs outnumber the bad ones by a very, very wide margin and they rarely get the credit they deserve for doing things right.

That's really good to hear and your right, we don't hear enough of the positive interactions people have with law enforcement agencies.

Got pulled over in Frost. Anyone who passes through that area knows you don't get warnings in that town. I fully expected to be run through the ringer.

Handed my license and CHL, was asked if I was armed, I said yes and where it was, he handed my CHL back told told me he would be back in a couple of minutes with my DL.

Came back a couple minutes later with my ticket and I went on my way, wallet feeling $200 lighter.

HA! I expected you to say you got a warning.

I have only been pulled over once since I have gotten my CHL. I posted a thread about it last year. The officer was awesome. He didnt show the slightest concern that he was the only one armed. He just asked where it was and went to the car, came back with a warning (taillight was out) and then asked what kind of pistol it was. From there we started talking about guns. I firmly believe most of the time you give respect and you will get it.

    Glad to hear.

We had a DPS stop us down in Uvalde around midnight one pre-Thanksgiving long weekend night. The officer was textbook and courteous. Exactly how you'd expect a Texas Troop to be and the one that adds value to the Trooper history & tradition.

Why didn't you already have your wallet out when he got to your door?

Even in REAL police states, a little courtesy with the locals LEOs goes a long way.

In the majority of cases, yes. But that poor guy from NJ going to MD in the news forum might say otherwise.

ETA: Correction I think the guy was from FL, not NJ.

It is wise to not be squirreling around while the officer is approaching. There is no need to have your wallet out yet, in fact, we suggest to wait for instructions from the officer.

Absolutely, they are watching for movement in the vehicle. Excessive movements can cause suspicion and alarm by the Officer.

Some people are just too paranoid. If I reach in my pocket to pull out my wallet, sure the officer may see me "squirreling around" and become suspicion, but his suspicions will be erased when he walks up and sees my hands on the wheel and wallet in my lap.

I am a former LEO and current CHL Instructor. I speak from experience as well as the recommendation from DPS. Roll your eyes all you want.

The advice stands, and is sound. Sit tight until the officer tells you what he needs.
