A colleague at work needed some cash and was selling a Mosin 91/30 - so we stopped off at his apartment after work on Friday and picked this thing up. Subsequent googling identifies it as a 1942 Izhevsk.

It looks brand-new - I assume refurbed. The rifling is very strong - he says he's fired 20 rounds through it, which I believe - he did an awesome job steaming out the cosmo, too. It came with 30 rounds of Prvi soft-point ammo and 200 milsurp FMJ, a long-ass spike-bayo, oil-can, cleaning-kit, sling, pouches...

Went to the range today to try it out. 50 yard w/ irons - 1st group at the bottom to get used to the trigger, 2nd at the top:

I tapped the front sight over to center the groups after I took this pic; I think this rifle is a keeper :)

Awesome!! I have to say, I really love mine too. They are great guns. I have a 1942 as well but she is still waiting for me to get around to cleaning her up to shooting her. For the price of the rifle and ammo (at this point) you can't go wrong.

Welcome to the club! Good shooting too, was that with surplus or privileged?

U know the surplus ammo is corrosive I'm guessing.

Not saying you don't, but you know what corrosive means in that context, right?

Clean soon after you shoot. The ammo leaves behind deposits that attract water, leading to rust. I've seen recommendations that some diltuted Windex is a good first-pass to get rid of the chemicals and trace moisture, then clean as normal.

Just posting so that information gets put in.

I know this is going to sound funny, but I bet you money that if you took it back out and installed the bayonet and shot it again, it would be about dead on.
I have test fired over a dozen of these and found the great majority of them shoot about 2-3 to the right at 100 yards but with the bayonet installed they are much closer to center.
I don't know what torque the bayonet puts on them but I think they are sighted in with them on

Also, there was a guy on Ebay selling a front site tool that used a threaded knob to make small adjustments.

Username=Mosin I know what it means lol. Yeah leaves behind KCl salts. Anything like water Windex whatever flush 'em out and clean like usual.

I concur with Vmax. The 91/30 is designed to be fired with the bayonet fixed. The Russians never even issued bayonet scabbards. They were supposed to be affixed to the rifle or in a pinch, the bayonet can be slid through the uniform belt. The Russians and Bulgarians were bayonet freaks and that's how they fought.

I figured as much, but the damn thing is already like 10 feet long! :)

Corrosive ammo - yes, it was spam-can ammo. I'm used to seeing that effect in Russian/Sov ammo, so she got a good cleaning with Ballistol once I got home.

My buddy always told me if it stops shooting you could slap on that bayonet and use the thing for yard work. :D

I love the Mosins myself but never fired them in NRA matches like my friend James did. From prone, the fireball from those rifles sears all of the vegetation forward of the firing line! Not to be undone, the butt end of that rifle has a similar impression on the shooter. In one match, James shot his rifle while wearing a T shirt and no shoulder cushion or jacket. 56 Rounds later, he had a fist sized blue beauty on his right shoulder!

There's just something about the Mosins that rings my bell. They aren't beautiful, handy or even super accurate but they are in the top 5 favorites for me.

The bore dimensions vary a lot and if you cast the barrel at the muzzle with Cerrosafe, the correct bullet diameter can be selected. I bought a pile of Lapua brass and have a nice selection of bullet diameters all the way up to the .303 Enfield bullets. I can custom load my 7.62x54R for each rifle even though the bores are inconsistent.

The rifles that actually handle .308 diameter bullets are the Finn conversions. If you like your Mosin, shop around for a Finn conversion. You're gonna like it!

Make sure you clean the barrel with windex or an ammonia and water solution immediately after firing that surplus ammo. That stuff will ruin the barrel

You should have put some down the barrel immediately after firing. I never wait if I shoot corrosive ammo, but then again I've only shot it through any of my mosins once and only 20 rounds.

Corrosive ammo isn't sulphuric acid - it won't harm the barrel by waiting for the 20 minute drive home.

Just by the by, while I appreciate your concern, I've shot Russian/Soviet ammo for decades - I just happen to be new to Mosin rifles ;)

AK-47: It works though you only clean it once every couple years.
AR-15: You have a special cleaner and use every time you fire it
Mosin: It was last cleaned at the end of WWII

AK-47: Your bayonet makes a good wire cutter
AR-15: Your bayonet is actually a pretty good steak knife
Mosin: Your bayonet can stab someone on the other side of the room

AK-47: When out of ammo your rifle will nominally pass as a club
AR-15: When out of ammo, your rifle makes a great wiffle bat
Mosin: When out of ammo, your rifle makes a supreme war club, pike, boat
    oar, tent pole, or firewood

AK-47: You buy cheap ammo by the case
AR-15: You lovingly reload precision crafted rounds one by one
Mosin: You dig your ammo out of a farmer's field in Ukraine and it works
    just fine

    AK-47: Service life, 50 years
    AR-15: Service life, 30 years
Mosin: Service life, 100 years, and counting

AK-47: You can accessorize you rifle with a new muzzle brake or a nice
    stock set
AR-15: Your rifle's accessories are eight times more valuable than your
    rifle
Mosin: Your rifle's accessory is a small tin can with a funny lid, but
it's buried under an apartment building somewhere in Budapest

AK-47: Late at night you sometimes have to fight the urge to hold your
rifle over your head and shout "Wolverines!"
AR-15: Late at night you sometimes have to fight the urge to clear your
house, slicing the pie from room to room.
Mosin: Late at night, you sometimes have to fight the urge to dig a
fighting trench in the the yard to sleep in.
