This subject may have already been covered so don't tear into me if it has but I just want input and thoughts.

G2 Research has released a new 9mm round called the R.I.P. which stands for "Radically Invasive Projectile." It's essentially like a Black Talon but has individual spikes that spread out to 6" in diameter. The ballistic gel tests are impressive and definitely prove to be effective for self defense. What do y'all think? Would y'all use them in your CCW?

I saw a pic of this on fb today. I want to see actual ballistics tests of it vs Hornady Critical Defence in tests involving clothing, auto glass, and whatever else they think I may shoot through to get an uber leet sniper kill.

Agreed. They need to test against any and all possible material for realistic use in multiple scenarios.

Or just get black talons. Like me.
    :->

I would but they're illegal for us peons to buy and Dallas doesn't have any more to spare. Plus the RIPS are nastier than the black talons I'm pretty sure.

Black talons aren't illegal, they just are no longer produced.

There are better options out there now. This seems like a gimmick that would lead to poor penetration.

I suppose I should have worded that better. They're not illegal but they changed the case to brass and renamed them to Ranger-T and restricted public sale to law enforcement.

As for the RIPs, I doubt they're a gimmick. You sure as hell wouldn't want to get shot with one and that's pretty much the point, to stop the aggressor.

Gimmick. But go ahead and buy some and be the baddest cat on the block.......until the next boutique projectile comes out with unsupported, hyped claims - and buy it.

I cant wait to get this ammo and make my enemy even more dead than critical defense makes them.

Why would i just want to hit them in the head when i could hit them in the head and cause 8 tiny pinholes at the same time?

Clearly this is the best ammo ever invented.

There is something in the back of my mind that tells me I don't want to use this RIP ammo, even if it works as advertised. Don't know what it is, can't really pin it down.

I hate the "explain it to the jury" debate, but I would hate to be on the stand trying to defend my good shoot and be asked why I felt I needed to use ammo so deadly it was called R.I.P.

It causing a great deal of inner conflict for me, luckily it appears to be junk and I don't have to worry about it because I have Hornady Critical Defense which has actually been tested for effectiveness.

I will stick with my tried and true Federal HST's for now. There is no 3rd party data that I have seen other than their own. Has there been anyone shot with this ammo yet and an autopsy performed on the body to get any supportive data?

For the most part, RIP basically claims its ammo does everything opposite to what you want in a defensive round....that ought to tell ya something.

Hence why I asked for an opinion. Personally, I prefer my Hornady Critical Defense rounds or Gold Dots but I find new innovations interesting, despite how gimmicky they are or may seem. Glad so many folks had insight though

It looks like there are plenty of things for the jagged front edge to get caught on. The demo video was pretty impressive, I'll give you that....
The spinning hole saw of death. :)
It looks like something that would be CGI and slo-mo in an action movie.
