I was wanting to find a place to go shooting in a rural area around Houston. Some place to set up targets and do some practice. Tactical draw and shoot type stuff. Since none of the ranges around here will allow it and the classes are so very expensive I figured this would be the best solution. Any ideas?

A Place to shoot in the Country

I know the feeling of being a city dweller and having no place to enjoy shooting, hunting and so forth. One reason I now live way out a long ways.

That ugly word, progress...Time was when you could ride from the Rio Grande to Canada without a fence or gate to open. The state owned the land. Land ownership and livestock called for fences but....

Even in the 30s and 40s in Central Texas most land was owned by the original descendents of the settlers, everybody knew everybody else,
and it was not tresspassing to cross over a neighbors fence to hunt.
You always closed gates and didn't shoot toward their livestock or spook them. You were welcome.

Then along came big money folks with big income from the cities buying farms and ranches, with them the posted, keep out, no hunting, no tresspassing signs. With that the paid deer, turkey, dove hunting leases which in most cases helped the owner to buy winter feed for his livestock in dry times. Thats progress, we move on, now the libs are after our guns, hunting, and belief in GOD.....

I'd say if you make a friend with some land offer to help them with the land regularly and help with feeding the cows etc. Always better to offer and get turned down than to not offer.

If its not too far for you, take a run out to Bear Arms Guns & Ammo at Livingston - about 5 miles west of Livingston on the 190. They have outdoor Pistol and Rifle ranges.

For the pistol range the cost is $6 (Yes Six) per gun including target. Shoot all you want or as long as you can take the heat. Straight target but you usually have the place to yourself (Unless I’m there with my father-in-law and son!)- Only exception will be when the rifles come out for Deer season.

And promise to clean up your brass. But more importantly, keep your promise. ;)
O yeah! The most important thing is to do what you say you are going to do. If you notice any trash blowing around where you were shooting that ain't yours, pick that up to. Always leave it cleaner than you found it.

I see all these videos on youtube of people just going out to the desert and shooting in the open with no problems, but I guess you can't just do the here in Texas, atleast in the southeast. Maybe if I drive out to west Texas I can find an open place to shoot.

I think it's Nevada where there are areas you can just drive into the desert and start shooting. It would be very convenient if I had a place like that nearby.

    Brazoria County
Well now that it will be cooling off some...
I usually do a feed and shoot at my place in Brazoria County on the fourth Saturday of the month.

    The rules are simple.
1 - Follow the ten commandments
2 - BYOG (bring your own gun)
    3 - BYOA (ammo)
4 - Bring something to eat and drink (pot luck style)
5 - Bring a chair and other comforts
6 - Beer is ok as long as it is left at the house and consumed after the shoot
7 - Pack it in Pack it out - (no trash left)
8 - No Full Auto - it scares the neighbors and the livestock
9 - Bring a new shooter if you can
10 - No 50 BMG and the like, I don't think my backstop can stop them
11 - No Armor piercing ammo, I don't think my backstop can stop them
12 - No tracer or incendiary ammo - pasture fires are nasty
13 - Black powder ok need to know in advance for fire safety

We normally start at 10am, after the morning dove shot, walk back to the range (1/4 mile) or trailer those who can't do the walk.
Shoot for a couple hours then go back to the house and fire up the BBQ.

I try to limit it to no more than 10 people so as soon as I get it rolling I will post the announcement and start taking RSVP's

My "range" is the back of my pasture and is just that.
I have not started building the shelter or benches as of yet.
There is one 12 foot wide 100 yard target stand and for pistol its just off to the side.
Shotgun, bring your own clays and I can set up the thrower.
