For years, I have purchased various brands of .22 LR rifle ammunition from Midway. Most was stuff I could not find locally (Eley, RWS, Norma, etc).

Even during the trying times of 2013, Midway had plenty of target .22 LR available at a fair price.

Today, I checked their website, and EVERY SINGLE listing was labeled with "Out of Stock -- No Back Order."

Perhaps this .22 LR shortage is far worse than many of us perceived.

I will not even begin to speculate why, but the market is way out of balance.

Maybe Midway employees are doing what Walmart, Gander Mountain and other major chains are doing. Buy it all themselves and then sell on various web sites.

Profits, I'm guessing. 22LR doesn't make as much per round as the more popular defense pistol calibers that are also in demand.

Do you have proof to back your claims that the employees of these stores buy it all up?

I have a "bunch" of .22lr on backorder with midway right now.
Based on past experience, im confident midway will come through.
if not, it wont be because they didnt try their best.

Except that midway employees aren't even allowed to buy any items that are quantity limited which 22lr is on their site.

The folks at Midway are about as good as it gets.

I have a really hard time understanding why the shortage of .22 LR is so deep and broad. Those have to be easy rounds to produce.

Don't have them on camera, just what I have been told by other Walmart employees (2 different ones). Said most shipments of 22lr ammo never gets put on the shelf. Employees that get off at 7:00 have their buddies sell it to them instead. Why do you find that so hard to believe? Gander Mountain was same deal even worse in some cases, employees taking ammo and not paying at all. At least one employee from Tyler Gander Mtn was turned in for selling ammo out of his car in the parking and was fired. And yes I know that is a fact, not a claim.

Most employees of Walmart go out of their way to help customers get .22 lr in my experience. This is from several different stores. Never heard of them buying it all or keeping it with out paying for it. They would rather help customers and keep their jobs then trying to make a few dollars on the side and risk losing their jobs.

My two .22LR backorders with Midway were originally for 12/31/2013; which has now been pushed to 6/30/2014. Be interesting to see what happens next.

I would venture to guess that Midway doesn't want to get involved in two year backorder lists. Maybe they have a limit on their backorder list and it is full.

What I am saying is that I could sell a truck load of .22 ammo for cost on this site alone in minutes. Literally. Now imagine what a site like Midway would have to deal with if they took every backorder.

Customers would be pissed if they got on the list only to find out that it may not be filled until 2020.

Had a few things back ordered at Midway and it always showed up. May have taken longer than I wanted but, so far they have not disappointed. At least not yet.

Come to Houston and just LOOK at our Walmart employees, and you'll change your mind. LOL

PM me a price for said truck load. ;-)

I too noticed the "no backorder" on Midway's ammo, and suspect it might be true that the list had just gotten too big. I have some on backorder with them, and like has been said, I am sure they will do their best to fill the order. If they can't, that's ok with me. Love MidwayUSA. We at gander mtn are not allowed to buy out the .22 LR stock we have before it hits the shelves. It all sells out in the moring within hours. Only 2 weeks ago we had a table full of 22, and still had some left by the end of the day.
