Ive been doing basic prep work for a SHTF situation. Ive been trying to be as practical as I could and prepare for actual possible situations. If things get to a SHTF situation things have probablly progressively got worse over time. Having an AK or AR would be nice in such a situation but as things get worse I bet more and more gun legislation will be passed. I dont see an all out gun ban getting passed anytime soon but as we can see in some states, guns with certain mag sizes and "scary guns" are being banned. To really be prepared in a SHTF or Bug In situation Id like to have a gun that would be the least likely to get banned by the government. What gun would that be? Something small like a 22? Or a shotgun since it cant hold as many rounds? Or something else?

Just because they are banned doesn't mean you have to turn them in.

Look at the fiasco in Connecticut. They "banned" the scary looking rifles and out of an estimated 300,000 firearms that were supposed to be registered only like 50,000 have been.

I think you're on the right track with a .22 and shotgun of some type. The other option I think would be good is something like the Mini 14/30 or Scout rifle.

But, I don't think a true SHTF or confiscation is coming anytime soon.

Look at all the other countries that have banned guns. What is left? First to go are full auto, then semi auto, then mag fed guns. All that are left are single and two barrel shotguns. Cartridge bans are also in play. First to be banned are mil cals. 308, 223, 30-06, 12 gauge and poaching guns like 22LR.

There have also been pushes to ban synthetic stocks. A bolt action with a plastic stock is a sniper rifle. A pump shotgun is "tactical or assault" gun.

What's left? A 20 gauge side by side with a wood stock. Get one with real ejectors and not extractors and Throw in a leather butt stock shell holder and it's a good choice if not the first choice.

I think Mikewood is on the right track. look to other confiscation programs to understand the progression. I would apply that thinking and come up with a set of guns that fit each category knowing that some will go and give yourself a series of buffer guns. by the time you get near the end of your supply you'll know things are getting serious and can think about getting creative.

I hope in such a scenario we'd be able to hang on to our 10/22's but I think anything semi will go quickly if it comes to that.

I think the Connecticut situation will be more the norm (in that most are not registering) than not so this is pretty far off. But then I never imagined some of the things that have happened would have ever happened.

I would say, .22 or shotgun but have stash of survivor gear, a 1000 rounds of 5.56, and AR15 buried in your back yard.

+1, or make it an AK and not in your backyard (they'll find that). Preferably somewhere only you know, in the country near where you might bug out (make that location virtually unknown). No google searches, etc. Take no electronic devices or modern vehicles there (go by bike and foot). Don't be seen, and leave no trace.

Oh and to your question, the government wants to ban them all. Make no mistake about it. If we were to go down that road, I wouldn't be worried about what the fuckers might be banning.

Probably the last firearms that they'll end up going after are the non-tactical shotguns and the wooden-stock hunting rifles with "low-capacity" or internal magazines.

Ones like these open-bolt tube submachineguns that the Irish Republican Army and Loyalists made at home with hand tools to fight each other with:

Something quiet and unregistered would be the least likely - a .22 rifle, perhaps.

I don't think the gov't will try to confiscate guns. Too hard and too likely to produce a revolt. No, what they will do is the "death of 1,000 cuts". Increase taxes - esp. on ammo, make ammo scarce or unavailable, make you sign or produce ID to get ammo, squeeze out the guns available by limiting magazine size, caliber, or design (e.g., "black rifles"), increase the pressure on gun dealers and drive them out of business, increase the restrictions on gun ranges - including OSHA rules (being done right now in Texas) and EPA rules (lead bullets, lead in range backstops, etc. - also being done right now), increase the costs to ship components and put huge restrictions on components (in the name of keeping them out of the hands of 'terrorists'). Eventually, they put most of the gun and ammo businesses out of business and dry up the supply. It will take time, but the end result will be the same - THEY will have guns; we won't.

Of course, if they DO decide to come and confiscate our firearms, it will not matter to me. I will be dead and I home the guy who grabs my rifle burns his hand on the hot barrel.

I read somewhere that the "grease guns" they came up with during WWII cost about $18 to manufacture at that time.
Plug that into the inflation calculator and that's $237 current USD.

The British Sten Mk2 only cost $8 back in the day = $105 USD.

But even with a complete gun ban there will always be people building them for the black market or resistance. Even in communist China, occupied France, and Ireland.

I agree that will probably be their plan, and also look at what they are doing in California as a model.

This strategy will fail though because we are already so hypersensitive about these things and have been stockpiling for Armageddon.

I once thought this same way. Thought having bolt actions and pump shotguns was the move.

Then I got on board and thought if they want to ban ARs and AKs, then I need ARs and AKs.

If you want to pursue your current logic though, definitely smaller bore, smaller capacity and not auto loading. Black powder? Pellet guns? (How far we going to go?)

There are so many different SHTF senerios it's impossible to think anything would cover them all. As far as a firearm that you could use for survival that would not be likely to be seized, I would, and do, have a Rossi combo with multiple barrels allowing many different calibers to be used. I also have been on the lookout for and old savage over under, mainly because my Dad had that gun, which would give you a rifle and shotgun.

I'm less worried about having firearms that will appease the gun-grabbers and more concerned with having the firearms that will help me prevent them from grabbing my guns. I'll be making a stand long before all they leave us with is zip guns.
