So, I'm a yankee transplant...enjoyed many a year of good hunting in the cold north, but the economy and a hot wife has driven me to Texas. Been here 2 years and loving it. I've adapted to the change nicely I think...got the TX Flag inlay for my Chevy logo...I LOVE living here. Proud to be a resident (unfortunately, not a naitive, or a true Texan by most people's standards :( )

One nice benefit is the LONG deer season we enjoy (2 weeks of firearm season in MI) and the use of feeders (a big no-no up north).

I am in the process of building my hunting equipment supply back up (blinds, stands, etc). Last year, I borrowed a feeder, but now I'm getting my own. The one I borrowed had some pretty heavy duty legs made from old water pipe...hogs really couldn't budge it much. So, I'm looking to build my own of similar quality and I already have the 55gal barrels and the spinner motors. I'm just needing to get some legs, but I'm still pretty new to this and am looking for some suggestions. I would like something pretty heavy.

Are there any sites that are good for ordering some heavy duty mounts, or is there anyone on here that is a welder and makes these for a fair price, or can one recommend a good source for these in the East Texas area (live in Lufkin).

Any other suggestions are also welcome...

I am married to a beautiful yankee{ guess she would be a damn yankee since she lives here} and I get to go to Pennsylvania and hunt proper deer in the fall

I would suggest you put a call out to any welders on the board who live in your area and work something out with them. You will get a better built product, that is not designed to wear out in 4 or 5 years.

Or you could go with a Monarch products feeder. Very well built, not the cheapest, but well built and worth the $$$.

Wife is born and raised here, but moved to MI in high school. I am born and raised in MI, and then moved here in my late 20's :)

Southern Michigan has some huge deer...by huge, I mean some are 250lbs+ It's always fun to go back home and hunt...I'm sure you feel the same way about PA...

Yes, any welder that is somewhat close, I'd rather do that than order a commercially made product. I'll get a better product, plus I know I am helping someone out rather than paying 50% markup on a cheap-a**, mass-produced product that will break in a couple years.

I don't know anything about that brand but, I think the feeder I had we used drill stem pipe 3'' (I think), the best way to build on is to take a look at how much abuse it will have to take, and go from there. Is your drum plastic or metal?

    55gal metal drum...

I do have hogs in the area, so the probability of it getting rubbed on is pretty good. I s'pose I could get some tack strips or something similar (like what you put rafters together with) from the hardware store and stick on the insides of the legs...

Now that you mention it, I believe this was the type of pipe used for the legs on the feeder I borrowed. I'm thinking about 1.5" - 2" dia. and about 8ft in length.

So, I guess I'd be looking for something similar. Even if I could get some 24" pieces with part of them flattened and bent, so I could bolt them to the side of the barrel or something, and then have the actual leg separate and put it on once I get the feeder to where it's going to sit.

I am actually a Southern Native { Texas by way of Alabama} So going to Pa. is a vacation for me and not going home lol. The deer there are huge though.

Where in M!ch!gan did you live? I lived in A2 and Detroit for about 8 years.

I always thought the U.P. had the biggest deer I have ever seen.

Clare. Right smack in the middle. Lived and worked in Jackson for a while, and was in A2 a lot. That was the weirdest town to get to know my way around...much more confusing than even these weird zig zaggy Texas roads.

UP does have some big deer...depends on where you go though. All the crazies from Detroit and Flint go up and shoot everything in sight and that doesn't make for deer to get very old. Southern MI is all corn country along with Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, so it churns out some huge deer.

We always used Unistrut. You could bolt it to the side of your barrel, cut a notch to angle it out at about 45 degrees or so with a sawz-all, or hacksaw (I don't recommend the hacksaw approach unless you have teenage boys to do the cutting....guess what I got to do when I was younger?), support the cut and angle with a cross member of unistrut...like using a big erector set. no welding required and pretty darn sturdy to boot.
