Went to Bass Pro yesterday. I was running low on 9mm, and by low I mean less than 250 rd. So I saw some TulAmmo for $10.50 for 50 rd. There was 15 boxes on the shelf so purchased 5 boxes along with a 100rd box of 38 sp. The old timer sales guy and I got into a conversation about the folks that come in there and purchase every last box of 22lr and or 9mm. Said that not 5 minutes after putting em on the shelf, One fella came and bought ALL the 22 LR. may have been 1500 -2500 rd, maybe 5000 rd or so. But anyway I appreciate folks that don't hord and only pick up a few boxes at a time. It was actually easier to pick up ammo when there was a 'shortage' than there is now. Its been months since I've seen 9mm practice rounds on any shelf. As far as cheap ammo goes, my Beretta, Jericho 941 and Stoeger Cougar eat any 9mm I give it. I keep em clean so its so its no big deal cleaning them.

    Gunz are icky.
Good for you that you actually found some to buy.
22 and 9mm are pretty tough to find around here. Once in a while there is a little bit of high end 9mm SD ammo around.
    22 is GONE in seconds.

So, no attempt by Bass Pro to limit quantities in a single sale? Bummer. It's one thing to move merchandise, another to perhaps satisfy ten customers vs ONE during a shortage. Hmmm...glad I'm not in retail any more. ;)

Can you be serious? Bass Pro, Academy, Walmart, Dicks, and Cabela's have had tight limits on .22 LR purchases for more than 14 months. Not one of those stores ever had more than 1,500 -2,500 -5,000 rounds on their shelves in the last 14 months.

It is simply impossible to HOARD unless you buy from flippers, back page, craig's list, or gunbroker, or at a flea market and gun show.

Finally, what do you consider "hoarding" versus stockpiling to mitigate future shortages?

I assume he's referring to hoarding being like the guy who came in and bought up all the ammo on the shelf (which also confuses me as almost every store I go to still limits boxes for 22 and sometimes 9MM). Some might call me a hoarder because I have some hard to find ammo, but I seldom buy in bulk and surely never empty shelves. I buy a few boxes here and there, it's just that I never get out to the range so it's stocking up.

Though admittedly I did jump on that cheap "Wolf" 7.62x39 on SGAmmo that isn't in boxes labeled Wolf. Cheapest I've seen 7.62 in a while (though not by too much).

I typically try to have consideration for folks, though, if I am going for some ammo that's nearly gone. If I was planning to get several boxes and there's 3 or 4, I'll just grab 2. If it's two or less then all bets are off :)

    22lr what is that? Lol
ive been able to find most calibers the last couple months except 22lr and 300blk
Bass pro has been a crap shoot, for rifle rounds Academy has been pretty good, 556 & 762 Walmart has been pretty well stocked, pistol rounds I've had the best luck at Cabelas

It's stockpiling when the ammo is calibers I don't use. When it's ammo I'm interested in, it's hoarding.

    Ha!

But if you're snagging it off the shelves to resell, it's hoarding. If you're stashing a caliber that you normally shoot and building up a stash in preparation for the next inevitable shortage, it's stockpiling.

About the only 22lr I have bought over the last year was one day at Academy, I just happend to be there and they opened up a case of the 1400 round Bucket O' Bullets.
I was standing there and the employee (I think mistakenly) told me I could buy 2 buckets if I wanted.
within a period of about 45 seconds I had 3 other guys lined up behind me at the gun counter, they smelled blood in the water.

I looked at them and since this was at 4 in the afternoon they didn't look like the hoaders that show up and wait outside at 7:30 and I chose to only buy 1 bucket and let someone else have some.

I have been stocking up on ammo way before the last rush, so I was in good shape anyway but I genuinely feel bad for a guy who can't take his kids shooting for lack of 22LR

    .
I posted on the "ammo" thread that this morning at the Conroe Academy there was all the popular handgun ammo - .22lr, .380, 9mm (WWB & 124gr NATO), 38spec, 357, .40 & .45 (and, of course, all the other SD stuff) (not seeing 10mm anywhere - but I'm not needing nor looking very hard)

bought the two box limit of .22lr and also got two 50rd boxes of 9mm, 124gr NATO (which I use in my p938 as SD ammo) - both calibers I'll shoot this and next week

didn't see anyone "hoarding" or buying for resale

If a guy bought his ammo supply during days of plenty while others were sucking their thumbs, I don't have a problem with that. The shortage of .22LR was easily predicted as it took nearly a year to dry up. Buying ammo is like surfing. You watch the waves and MOVE when the time is right! If you miss the wave, then too bad.
