Does anyone know of any significant issues with the ultra short SBRs on ARs? I'd like to build a 7" - 9" SBR in .223 just because I've had a fascination with a micro-CAR concept; an ultra compact, loud as hell, flame spitting SBR.

I'm planning on using a Rock River pistol lenth upper in conjunction to a registered SBR lower that I will build. I'd like to have the ability to toss on a 16" upper for longer distance work and hunting.

Another option is a 10.5" LMT. It'd save me from having to engrave it, and would be a solid choice in my opinion. I'd have to put my hands on one first, as the 10.5" Bushmaster I held was not as lightweight and manueverable as I thought it would be.

    Out here by the lake!
I had a CMMG AR-15 pistol with a 7.5 inch barrel. The thing ran like a scalded dawg. Muzzle flash & report was out of control, even added a Noveske flaming pig & it was more then I wanted to deal with. Can't suppress that short of a barrel unless you go to titanium. Then who want to risk a titanium can on one.

!3.5 inch barrel makes much more sense. I'm thinking about sending my H&K 51 in to RTDS for an overhaul. Even thought about a G3K. Really don't want to deal with the restamping & other bullshit.

My shooting buddy has one, with a DIAS. It is fun to shoot and runs pretty good - only problem so far is when it burned through the gas tube and aluminum gas block at the port which converted it to a strait-pull bolt action.

He replaced the tube and block with a steel one and so far so good.

You do not need a titanium can to suppress this upper. The blast baffle will take a hell of a beating though and there is so much powder still burning that sustained full-auto would not be advised.

Yeah, it will beat the shit out of the blast baffle for sure. Personally, I am not sold on Ti being the best material for suppressors.....

My point was that your belching a lot of hot gasses on a barrel that short. I never chrono my 7.5 inch, but it was eroding the flaming pig.

    That's the idea.

I just want noise, flamage, and awesomeness. I expect nothing more out of it. That being said, you are saying it's going to be hell on the gas block, tube, and any muzzle components? That seems reasonable since I'm not afraid to rebuild it if I need to.

I plan to buy a longer barrel upper for hunting and target work. On that upper I will be looking to suppress it, since I plan to buy a .30-cal can down the road. I want to get a bolt-rifle built first.

I'd keep a spare gastube around, the gasblock that was ruined was aluminum - not a huge surprise it failed. What it did was cut a neat little hole strait up from the gas port. This upper lives a hard life, full Beta-C mag dumps are very very common......

Also, on uppers that short - it's a good idea to put a Wolf extractor spring or D-ring. Otherwise the extractor tends to jump over the case rim and not extract/eject.

Also, .30 caliber cans work great on 5.56 guns - slightly louder, but not by much at all. We did some testing at KNS and found that the YHM .30 can is quieter on 5.56 than the YHM 5.56 can - go figure.....

Well if that's the case why not a H&K 51?

I can't afford one. I'd really love to have the 51, but it's out of my price range. The AR15 I can piece together as time and money permits.

I suppose I could save up for a 51. We'll see how things play out financially.

    Thanks for the info Daniel.

I've shot lots of different .30 cal cans on the ARs. I think that is the way to go unless you are worried about overall length and weight.

I won't be using a full auto setup on this, that'd be nice, but I got plenty of other obligations to take care of first.
