The calendar says spring is here. For y'all in central and south Texas, that's likely true.
In the Big Country we rely on a few signs provided by nature.

Mesquite trees. If the mesquite hasn't budded yet, there's likely to be more freezing weather.
I've seen this fail once in my life. Fruit trees get zapped as often as not but a mesquite just won't.
They aint quite there yet. Also, a mature tree will give a more accurate indication that no more freezing weather is due.
If I find leaves on a tree with a trunk diameter of 12" or more, I get to planting veggies.

Buzzards. They migrate out of here for winter and seeing one or two in March isn't unusual. I've seen a couple so far, that's it. Road kill just sits uneaten right now.

Scissor tail birds. These are a pretty accurate indicator too. "Sure sign of spring" according to older and wiser folks.
I ain't spied one yet this year.

So, as I bask in warm sunshine and my skin tans and burns, I keep the heavier clothes handy and an eye on the trees and skies.

I think we're in springtime right now, but I wouldn't put any money on it. Roadkill around here gets gone pretty quick all year around. My oak trees are buddin' so I hope we don' have any more freezes!

"Thunder in February, freeze in April".
Another old timer saying that holds true here more often than not.
Seems like it was around the 10th of February when we had thunder here.

When the pecan trees around here (Greater Houston area) begin to bud, you can pretty well count on nothing but warmer weather ahead. Right now all the deciduous trees I can see out the window all have new leaves in the past week, except the pecans.

Got the purple martins in, in the last couple of days. The Frau and and I sat out on the back deck, had a glass of wine, and all was good in the world.

My red and burr oaks are sprouting new leaves. They are three weeks late. No fear of frost here.

If you haven't planted your potatoes, better do so right quick march!

    winter to spring in Virginia:

It gets cold and rains some. Cold and wet hang around for a while in March. Eventually it warms up and we have some clear days (a week or two), then it starts fucking raining again!
