If Academy carries the gun you are looking for, they will almost always be the cheapest price in town.
You can find some deal at Carters county as well. They do have frequent sales.

Pruett’s guns and Ammo has good pricing as well.

I agree with Academy, however I LMAO at Pruett's G&A having good prices.

    If I were you:

First figure out what gun you want, that is the hard part. If you don't know, there are some good places to go see a wide variety like Collectors Firearms (not good pricing) and gun shows where you can handle them. There are also ranges that rent some guns so you can try them out, cheaper if you have narrowed it down to a couple by then.

Next check the online retailers (Buds Gun Shop, Impact Arms, CDNN, J&E, etc.) to get a good idea of their prices on that gun. If you buy from them, you are looking at roughly a $20 FFL charge for it to be transferred to you. Remember out of state businesses that ship to your FFL here will not collect sales tax from you. (That is almost 9% you don't have to pay up front.)

Also check out the thread below to find the stores near you and either call them, visit them or contact them through their website. The all should let you know if they have what you are looking for and the price.

Finally, last but not necessarily the last thing you do after you figure out what you want, check the classifieds here and put up a Want To Buy thread.

If you are still having trouble, ask for help here. There are range days and I am sure the good folks that attend those will introduce you to most any gun you have an interest in and tell you all about their collection if you ask. If for example you have settled on a G19, but have never shot one and would like to. Put up a thread asking to meet someone at a range, buy some ammo, pay their range fee, and shoot their gun before you purchase you own. You will probably find someone willing to meet.

I know this is year old late reply to this post; however, hope someone else can gain from it.

I have bought 2 pistols at AJC Gun Shop (ajcgunshop.com). They have a location in Katy and another in Clute. I mainly deal with them at the gunshow. I agree with BWHITT, Carter's has some good deals if you look for the sales. You can do Academy; however, don't expect a knowledgeable staff at all. Just make sure you know what you want, check around, talk to friends about it.
