WTF! I was in Academy last night looking at some guns with my wife, and I saw a sign that read " MUST BE 21 OR OLDER TO PERCHASE TACTICAL WEAPONS" The Academy guy said when I asked him if it was a law or a store policy he said it was a law. They also would not sell my wife's friend a box of 22 ammo the day before because " It could be used in a hand gun" Well so can 30-06 or 30-30 if you by the right handgun!

You really think Academy personell would know the law?
Well no, but the book he was reading it out of did say that I saw it. I'm just not sure if it is a store policy or a new law that I have not heard of. And by the way the Academy at 183A and 1431 has all malor pistol caliber (9mm, 357sig, .40, .45) ammo in stock and 223's, mostly monarch but it shot pretty good out of my 40. Just FYI.

As long as you state that the ammo is for a long gun you should be fine. i purchased 9mm all the time before I was under 21, thats what the marlin camp 9 shoots. And Tactical weapons for 21 above only??? Somebody at Academy isn't competent

The 22 ammo I was not there for so I have only heard what they said. They said "If it can be used in a handgun then you must be 21". And the whole tactical weapon thing? WTF is Academy trying to do it's own form of gun control? To the best of my knowledge there is no LAW saying that an 18 year old cannot by an AR 15! That is stupid and if academy wants to do things that way then I will not do business with them anymore.

Sounds like another lovely store policy.

Starting to see .410 shotgun shells behind the counter a lot too. Kind of funny. . . . . almost.

Pistol grip shotguns are 21 because they are an AOW, that is the law.

AR15s are rifles, and are 18.

Academy's reserves the right. However, I think the guy behind the counter is confused about the pistol grip thing and is extrapolating it to everything with a pistol grip.

Name the store and it's location. I'll call the HQ and talk to someone.

Academy does not sell AOW's. Pistol grip shotguns with 18" barrels and at least 26" OAL are just shotguns, not AOW's.

This is all just store policy. Corporate America is scared to death of law suits. This is just one way to limit their exposure to liability. The average gun department sales person at Academy is slightly smarter than the janitor when it comes to firearms. If you are looking for intelligent people behind the counter go elsewhere.

I do not believe that is right. It seems like it's sort of a gray area of whether a pistol grip makes it a "pistol" or whether it remains a shotgun, considering ATF's history of making sh*t up as they go and the rules changing every single week. Though, I have yet to see a ATF/court ruling or federal code that states anything like that. They certainly aren't considered an actual AOW as long as they are at least 18" in barrel length and I believe at least ~26" in overall length, as that would mean they'd have to be registered with the NFA and that would also mean that several firearms manufacturers are committing thousands upon thousands of federal felonies shipping these things to every dealer.

They are AOWs... the Mossbergs even come with a warning on the box stating that it's to be sold to 21+. The ATF has said it's an AOW.

The length requirement is for stocked guns, and the pistol-grip shotguns aren't pistols because they lack rifling. That's why the Judge has the "shallow" rifling, to avoid the short-barrel AOW status.

It is the store stated above 183A and 1431 (white stone BLV) and I know there is a gray area when it comes to the pistol grip shot gun but an AR! Please! these guys are on the same knowledge level as an average monkey! And the guy showing the guns must have pointed everything we looked at at me. My wife said something real quite once and the guy immediately corrected it.LOL She's learning so fast. I think this is a store policy and it is their right to choose who they sell what to, this does not effect me in anyway other than another piece of my rights striped away! Alan if you call them let me know what they say. I'm going to call them tonight, before that it's back to the transmission shop just one more time, if it breaks after this I'm looking for a Lawyer.

    (5) The term "shotgun" means a
    weapon designed or redesigned, made
or remade, and intended to be fired
from the shoulder and designed or redesigned
and made or remade to use
the energy of an explosive to fire
through a smooth bore either a number
of ball shot or a single projectile for
each single pull of the trigger.

The key is "fired from the shoulder".

We've had several ATF agents say different, and the Mossberg pistol grip shotgun boxes say not to sell to anyone that's not 21+

Store has the right to sell to whoever, and refuse service to whomever also. Any long rifle sells legally to anyone who is 18 or older in EVERY state, unless restricted otherwise by state, county, or city ordinances. But as stated above, Store policy can dictate otherwise.

Kinda reminds me of the whole "can add to but not take away" bullshit...

I don't buy anything but running shoes from Academy unless they have a good price. That's just me though....
