CORPUS CHRISTI - A Corpus Christi man is fighting for his life after a brutal stabbing Tuesday night.
Joshua Newton, 20, was walking home from the HEB on Leopard Street with his pregnant wife, when they were attacked by another couple.
Newton is in critical condition and two people are facing aggravated assault charges that could turn into attempted murder charges. The stabbing was the result of an argument over a hair straightening iron.
"It was one step away from a murder," CCPD Homicide Lt. Isaac Valencia said.
Police said the two suspects, Alfred Aviles and Liliana Vera, stabbed and stun gunned Newton Tuesday night.
According to police, Newton and his pregnant wife, 19-year-old Ashley Dunaway, were attacked after Aviles, 27, and Vera, 21, got into an argument with them.
"The females in question apparently have history with each other and one reminded the other that she wanted her hair straightener back," Valencia said.
Police said the victims were walking from HEB on Leopard down to their apartment, which is on Antelope. They said that's when they were confronted by the suspects on Antelope and Lily.
Police said shortly after the women began to argue, an argument also erupted between Newton and Aviles. According to police, that was when Aviles stabbed Newton three times in the chest and once in the arm, while Vera attacked Newton with a stun gun.
Newton is now in the hospital in critical condition.
"I was sitting there at the bus stop. I heard the guy scream, and he was kind of leaning over," witness Robbie Payne said.
"They had to do a complete transfusion of blood on him. He had lost so much blood that he had the equivalent of a complete transfusion into his system," Valencia said.
Aviles is also accused of stabbing Dawn Gentry, 22, who tried to break the fight up.
Police said Vera also used the stun gun on Gentry. Gentry ended up with three stab wounds in the back, but police said she's doing OK.
Currently, the suspects are behind bars on aggravated assault charges, but that could change.
"God forbid he takes a turn for the worse and he expires. [If] he dies, it's murder," Valencia said.
Newton's pregnant wife was not injured in the attack.
