HOUSTON—Two suspects were hospitalized and two others on the run after a shootout with an off-duty HPD officer in an upscale Galleria-area subdivision Tuesday morning.
According to HPD, the officer was working a security job in the Tanglewood subdivision when the incident occurred.
Police said the officer was in full uniform, sitting in an unmarked car at Doliver and Tanglewood, when a Cadillac Escalade pulled up next to him.
The officer said two armed men got out of the SUV and approached him.
Police believe they intended to rob or carjack the officer.
That’s when the officer drew his weapon and exchanged gunfire with the suspects.
Both suspects were hit.
Two other suspects who remained in the Escalade took off, police said.
The officer, a 29-year-veteran of the force, was not injured.
Police said they don’t think the suspects initially realized they were dealing with a cop.
“I don’t believe that they knew he was an officer going into it,” HPD Homicide’s Rick Moreno said. “But once the door was open and one of the suspects actually brandished the weapon in the manner that he did, it was very obvious that he was a Houston police officer in full uniform.”
Both suspects were taken to the hospital. One of them was sent to surgery, and the other was listed in stable condition, police said.
Both face charges of attempted capital murder of a police officer and aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.
It was not clear who the officer was working security detail for at the time, but police said it could have been a private homeowner.
The shooting is being investigated by HPD Homicide and the Internal Affairs Division of the DA's office.
