In the past I have packed rubbing alcohol in my first aid kit, but decided to exchange that for a small plastic bottle of everclear. Will work just as well for sterilization as rubbing alcohol.

Plus, you never know if the mood will hit you to get wasted once the world's gone to shit, lol. And if that's not your fancy, then you'll certainly have an opportunity to trade with someone who would like to.

I would prefer a 'shine over Everclear. But when push comes to shove, keeping all options open is a safe bet.

Everclear is wonderful for most iterations of "swimmer's ear." I know from experience.

I always have a large bottle both upstairs and down. The stuff is useful many, many ways.

Bwahha - laughs. We keep a 1.75 liter bottle at work for cleaning deadweight pistons. Cleaning masses to sub-milligram values etc. Auditors always look at us sideways when they see it, but it does the trick.

In my college days I had a friend that had water in his ear. I suggested putting vodka in it.

It didn't work out so well, and he was really pissed.

Vodka, as you obviously found out, isn't suitable. The proof isn't high enough.

I had swimmer's ear constantly as a kid. The local small-town doc was pretty clear with my folks. "I can write you a prescription for a little container of expensive stuff that you can put in his ear. Or you can use Everclear. Both work the same." In my long years of experience with the problem, his words have always proved true.

I thought everclear was only good for trash can punch.
    And communal watermelon punch.

Cut a plug out of a watermelon rind, pour in a liberal quantity of Everclear, reach in with a tool to mash up the insides (optional), replace the plug, and refrigerate the watermelon overnight.

At the party, punch straw-sized holes in the watermelon, insert long, large-diameter straws, and invite all the ladies to drink deeply.

And the guys, too, I guess.

I've seen one large watermelon put a truckload of partygoers on their collective butts back when I thought that sort of thing was fun.

We left the same friend in charge of getting the vodka when we spiked a watermelon once. Once.

He showed up with a bottle that had a yellow label and said Extra Smooth Vodka in black lettering. It was anything but extra smooth. The end result tasted like lightly flavored watermelon running alcohol.

    Sent from an undisclosed location.

Just put a couple drops in the ear like you would with the prescription drops? Couple times a day?

We have a daughter with ear infection issues and I am finding your information very intriguing.

    And then eat the watermelon.

Everclear dries and kills germs. It's cheap and won't hurt anything. If I had a kid with ear infection issues, I'd consider it worth a try. Then again, I'm not a doc and if your doc forbids it you'll have to make the decision.

And no, I don't do a couple of drops. When I had swimmer's ear, I tilted my head over, reached over the top of my head with the hand on the other side of my body, then grabbed the ear and pulled. This straightens the outer ear canal. (Protip - it's the right way to put in earplugs, too.) Then I dumped in at least a teaspoon, sometimes a tablespoon of Everclear, completely filling the ear canal. I might even work my finger into the face, just in front of the ear opening, to help the Everclear go deeper.

It only needs to stay in a few seconds. The you let go of the ear and straighten your head on your shoulders. Excess Everclear will run out; have a paper towel ready.

This method dries out the inside of the ear and kills bacteria. As I said above, I think it's worth a shot.

Thank you sir. I will definitely give it a try.

My girlfriend is a vet tech. They use everclear IV drips for dogs and cats that get into antifreeze. Counters whatever it is that poisons them (I think it is ethylene glycol).
