hey all. I need to ship my beloved 1911 Govt. model pistol--i will be going back to Wisconsin soon, will NOT deal with TSA at airport, at all, so, any advice and/or information regarding which carrier will handle firearms and is most likely to get my pistol there will be greatly appreciated. BTW, I plan to send it to myself, in care of my Dad, if that has any bearing on the situation. thanks!!!

I sent my Python back to Colt via Fedex overnight air. Shipped it from a fedex hub. It cost around ~$100 with insurance.

They asked me to declare what was in it for insurance, said it was a firearm and that's all. Didn't hassle me at all about it. This was at their shipping depot though, I think the privately owned shipping stores make up their own rules and can be jackasses.

With that said flying with a firearm is easier than boarding an aircraft. Simply declare it when you check your bag. They will make you open the box, inspect it, then lock the unloaded gun back in the box with padlocks and put it in your checked luggage. Easy peasy. Certainly easier than shipping it.

I agree with Mikewood, I'd much rather check my firearms in my luggage (and have done so on many occasions).

It's also a lot cheaper (i.e., it doesn't cost anything!).
