I just got a new AR15 and before I put any rounds through it I wanted to get opinions on the break in process and if there is a certain ammo that people prefer to run. I'm new to this stuff so I don't know what's bad, good, and better? I've seen steel casing and brass casing but I don't know what is good. Any info is appreciated! Thanks

Mine eats whatever you feed it and that's about all I care about. Never heard of break in ammo.

Well what I meant was is there a preferred ammo, I don't want to run crappy ammo through my new rifle

There exists somewhere on them internets a throat and barrel erosion study where they shot lots of different ammo then cut the barrels lengthwise to revel the damage if any.

I seem to recall that much of the cheap/imported ammo did indeed do more damage but you'd have saved enough money in the end to buy a new barrel.

The only thing that I'm aware of is your barrel's twist rate and projectile weight. Lots of info on that in here. Like BC said, the Federal xm193 is kind of a standard round.

Any of the following brands will work just fine: Winchester White Box, Remington UMC, Federal American Eagle, Fiocchi, Independence, Federal XM193/XM855. There are many other brands out there. No special ammo is needed to break in the rifle. I prefer brass cases over steel cases.

I agree.. just go get yourself a few hundred rounds of the Federal and you should be good to go. If you are going to be shooting under 100 yards at first, I wouldn't over think the weight at this point. 55 or 62 grain will be fine regardless of the twist rate. The important thing is you get out there and learn all about your firearm and have fun.

Cheap brass cased ammo. Cheapest around here has been American Eagle at Walmart for $7.37/20.

Use the Federal XM193 to make sure the gun functions with the ammo it was designed to use. If everything's OK then try wutever.

Some guns just don't like the underpowered steel cased stuff. Others do fine.

If you start with the weak Russian stuff and have problems you won't know if your gun is broken or if it's just picky about ammo.

Steel works ok in mine, but after ~200 rounds, almost always get a case stuck in the chamber. Then have to knock it out and thoroughly clean it. Isn't worth the hassle since I can easily go double that in a range trip. Don't recall it ever happening with brass cases.

I notice the milspec stuff is hotter.
