I use to have a Marlin Camp 9mm Carbine and took rabbits, squirrels and my favorite coons.
I was using hand loads and speedy one's at that, taking advantage of that longer barrel.
    147gr FMJ @ 1350fps.
Biggest problem was over penetration at close range - LOL!!!

What about paper and steel targets ? Just a thought, unless the squirrel is in the process of MUGGING YOU !

Out of a pistol 9mm is a little much.
In a carbine you can almost always get a clean head shot and not blow it all too hell.
In a pistol even when down loaded to around 875 - 950fps it just to much bullet cross section and causes way to much tissue damage.

No kidding, those South Texas squirrels are a force to be reckoned with. Don't take chances
This was a Floresville stalker, chased my wife and her mom for a week, her dad missed it with the shotgun, I got it with the 9mm ... you've seen the movies you shoot em once they come back for ya, so I finished him off

I shot a squirrel in the head with a 9mm, once it hit the ground it took 2 more in the chest for good measure
