Toll Bill CTRMA?

Hey guys. Strange thing here.

I received a Toll Bill from CTRMA for June 6, 2014, and 14:10 in the afternoon, for a License Plate I do not own, or recognize, it doesn't belong to anyone in my household, and have not rented any vehicle in my lifetime.

I was at work at that time, Friday June 6th at 1410 in the afternoon.

Any idea whats up? Could they have made a mistake, or should I start trying to figure out if my Identity has been stolen, or what??

It's too late at night right now, says the offices are closed.
My worry is, it says the only three ways to dispute are to provide proof of sale of vehicle, Stolen Vehicle report, or Leased or Rented to another entity at time of violation.

I mean, it's only $2, but I'm more concerned about the implications if someone has registered a vehicle under my name.

Do u drive that tollway? And did you drive it that morning or afternoon? With my NTTA account i can look it up, not always are the times spot on.

It's often that the plate recognition software misread the plate. There should be both a picture and, somewhere in the text, a statement of the plate number. Look at the picture and read the number they cite. Are they different? If so, the plate recognition software barfed.

I actually hope this isn't the case. The contractor who runs that system can never admit that their software isn't perfect. If you find a case where the software screws up, you can bet good money that there's essentially no way to fix the problem. That's the way they set up their processes - an absolute bureaucratic hell-maze.

I once got a speeding ticket for exceeding 5MPH in a federal parking garage in Houston. I had an old friend attorney who wanted to fight it just for fun. If a $35 speeding ticket showed up on the docket of any of the federal judges we had at that time in Houston, they'd explode at the Federal Protective Service for wasting their time. We were looking forward to the court battle. Seriously.

When I got docketed, I was required to appear in a courtroom in Miami, Florida.

I paid the ticket.

One piece of advice - even if you decide to pay the ticket because it's not worth fighting, wait as long as possible before you pay. If someone has registered a car in your name, you should see a bunch of violations real quick. That will actually bolster your case and make it easier to fight.

Heres a picture of the thing. I dont even have a plate near what it says. No picture on the bill.

I live nearby San Antonio, and the nearest ive been to Austin in the last year, was Buda, a couple weeks back in my subaru which plates start as DB9.

I suppose its possible they got a couple numbers switched around when printing or billing the plate?

Ive got LifeLock but havent gotten any notices.


Edit: Also strange, is Bill date is 6/6/14, where as the listing says 6/18/14. (Either date, I was at work on a Military Installation on camera.)

Call customer service tomorrow. If there's a known glitch, maybe they'll just handle it. At least, I hope so.

When I had a dispute over something like this many years ago, I was told flat out by a Harris County Attorney that there was no such thing as an appeal. I could either pay the bill or stop driving on the toll roads but that there was, literally, no legal avenue to appeal the fines. I assume things have improved since then but, still, I am never hopeful when there's a screw up with automated law enforcement systems that are administered by contractors.

EDIT: I read it as 06/18, not 05/18 lol. Either way, I haven't driven up anywhere near Austin except for my trip to Buda to sell a rifle in the last year.

And that day (5/18)was a Sunday... Was in Devine that day all day.

I'll definitely be calling in the morning. If I have to, I'll pay it, but it's a little uncomfortable having that through at the back of your head about possible identity theft. @_@

doubtfull its identity theft... if you have a friend who can run plates, have them run the plate #. Ask the Toll Authority if they have a picture. Like you said, prob not worth investing a lot of time for 2 dollars, but its the principle.

I had just gotten home from checking out the Truck I ended up buying. Posted there right after getting home from Devine! Unless I can make it from South San Antonio to that Toll area in less then an hour.

Update: Toll waived. The picture shows a Older Model Toyota with the BC8Y546 plate, which they said dmv was registered to my 93 Subaru according to the DMV.

Strange.

EDIT:
DMV reported that the above plate was a previously registered plate that was cancelled and removed before I purchased the vehicle back in 2011. Rep said it was possible someone got a hold of those plates and are driving with them, but the shouldn't have come back to me for registered owner.

I had something similar happen with the NTTA. The person entering the license plate number mistook a Q for an O. It was on an SUV instead of a miata. I called and pointed out the errors and they quickly removed the billing error of my bill. The can review the images when you ask them.
