How does one figure out how much a gun is worth regarding resale value? I have 3 guns that I am looking to sell, but don't know how to value them. As soon as I get enough posts, I intend to post them in the classified section.

Go on to the numerous online firearm auction sites to get a good idea of the price range the model is selling, then appraise their condition as well as you can to determine what you should ask. If it's too much than they won't sell, if they sell too quickly then you will always wonder if you didn't ask enough. Better to err on the side of caution, it's always easier to lower your price than to raise it!

Not really, most are only good for providing the range of asking prices. You might want to consider online firearm vendors as well to get an idea of what they are asking.

It's all about research, the more you do the better idea you'll have...

Are these normal, run-of-the-mill guns? If so, MMM has told you enough for you to avoid major mistakes.

Weird guns, though, tend to get weird on pricing.

I thought I'd throw that in there because I kinda like weird guns. :)

I usually start with budsguns and work my way over to sites like gunbroker and others.

My general rule is start 10% off new prices for a lightly used gun. That leaves some room to negotiate. Market demand and rarity play into it too.

Like stated above, you can always lower the price. Raising it is more difficult.

Has anyone used Blue Book of Gun Values? Are their prices "accurate"?
    Yes and yes.
Agreed but only with a caveat.

The last time I talked to the author it was at an NRA Convention "Bring In Two Guns for Appraisal" event. He took a look at one of my pistols, looked at the entry in his current book, and then promptly quoted a price of about double the highest price in the book. Considering that my example was well-worn, I was very confused. He pointed out a configuration characteristic that was super rare and not even addressed in the book.

That's why I asked if the OP had any weird guns. Weird guns == weird valuation problems.

The Blue Book also has problems when there are price spasms due to political problems but that's just the nature of the beast. When the govt starts to meddle, markets can become extremely volatile.

OK thanks for the info about BBoGV. I got a subscription and entered dads guns in it so mom can have a base line to ask.

I completely understand about weird guns and will add sentimental value as well. I now have a Glenfield 30A that is valued at ~$250-300. I won't sell it for any amount (within reason) because it was handed down from dad.

Yep, my Smith, being that it is a 20ga is worth double what the same in 12ga is.
But this is only mentioned in a small section above the values in BB of G.

^^what he said. AR's are a buyer's market for now for sure. The model 70 could be all over the map for price.

Good info here, I am in the same situation. I took a couple of my guns into a big box store and they valued them way lower than expected. Selling your self definitely better.

If I'm selling on a blog, or site specifically for selling guns, I filter search for the exact type of gun I'm trying to sell to see what the going price seems to be and price accordingly.

Unfortunately I suffer from the disease, so I spend WAY too much time looking at guns and prices..
