PS: my FIL gave me his extra telescope. Got it out two nights ago for the first time. Easily able to see Jupiter, it's 4 largest moons, and a couple stripes on the planet.

I just can't get myself to believe there is a satellite or probe orbiting the sun. I mean come on, really? Wouldn't it melt? How long did it take to get there? The sun is supposedly 93 million miles away. Seriously

Nice try! Troposcatter wouldn't work with the earth being flat. How would the atmospheric layers stay in place? Why wouldn't something go around the ends, or the ends on the earth?

I think we need to put up the "DON'T FEED THE TROLL" signs.
The previous record holder was the Helios-2 which made orbit around the sun at 27 million miles away. Solar Probe Plus is on track for launch next year with the plans of flying around 3.7 million miles away from the sun.
They can accomplish this with proper distance, and materials made. For Solar Probe Plus, there will be a solar shield deployed that is made of Carbon-Carbon composite. This is the same material used on Formula One brake systems, tips of intercontinental ballistic missiles, and even the wing edges and nose of the space shuttle.
The satellite systems and instruments for the Solar Probe Plus are located square behind that shield and will be fully blocked from direct radiation. They will also be wrapped in gold foil which does a great job at blocking heat and radiation.
Helios 1 and 2 were both launched in 1976, and traveled at speeds as fast as 157,078 mph. It took them around 5 months to reach orbit, and are still in orbit today even though they've been deactivated.
