lol I went through the same two checkpoints a couple weeks ago. The eastbound one is coming from big bend and is a few miles before Alpine, right? They stopped us at 2 or 3 AM, told us the dog was triggered, searched inside our giant black SUV for drugs with a dog, and then told me I passed Alpine already to gauge my reaction when I damn sure knew I didn't.

The one through to Las Cruces went smooth, too much traffic to search everyone. The guys there were chill and joking around.

yeah, near alpine, Pine Valley or something to be exact.

As soon as I went through that time, a CHP was hanging out RIGHT THERE and nabbed me for no front plate. I explained to him that my bumper was hanging on by a coat hanger and my front plate was obviously a victim of collision. He looked at me like a total dick and told me it could have been stolen before the accident and is now being used for crimes.

    a big WTF to him.

Yeah, I realize that the border can't be an infinitesimally thin line. It has to be at least a few hundred yards wide so that buildings can be built for administrative purposes, vehicles processed, etc.

And, yes, I realize that constitutional rights effectively cease to exist when you're on the border. (Yes, that's a mild overstatement but I don't want to get off in the weeds on that issue.)

But what bothers me is the arbitrary designation of 100 miles as the width of the border. Why does "the border" have to be more than 1 mile or 10 miles wide?

I ask again, does this "100-mile-wide border" bother anyone else?

Yes I do find that somewhat funny If they tried that in my country of origin then the entire landmass would be considered border

I have been through many checkpoints all over the country. No issues even while pulling a big box trailer.

I did get pulled in once somewhere. Officer said they were checking everybody as they had just opened.

Opened the trailer, he looked in, closed it back up, hit the road.

I had more problems with officers not knowing the CDL laws than at any check point.

Used to go through one all the time south of Falfurrias coming back from quail hunting. A truck full of guns and dogs - never got more than the citizen question and waved through. I did see a lot of vehicles being de-constructed though.

When I was covering the RGValley in the mid and late 90's I was always perplexed and amused that the "border checkpoints" were about 50 miles north of the border on 281 (Now 69C?). I always viewed it as we had already ceded control of that much territory.

I don't know, I kinda have mixed feelings about that. Although I probably would answer the question, and I certainly and surely would comply at a border crossing, I do feel that 50 miles inside the border, unless there is probable cause, is a bit ridiculous and smells of fascism. I have yet to see any checkpoints anywhere but at the border of Canada and I know for a fact terrorists have come through that border.

Who do we let dictate how much freedom we should have? When do we say "enough is enough"? I understand there is problems, but how much freedom are we willing to give up to solve those problems? When we are stopped on our way to work or getting groceries? Is my license enough when I'm asked "show me your papers"?

It's one thing to beef up our borders, it's quite another thing to regulate movement inside our borders.

Went through the check point in Brackettville - about 30 miles east of Del Rio - after finishing our Christmas deer hunt, back seat of the truck was full of our gear and had three coolers in the bed. Officer asked if we were citizens. Didn't ask what country, just if we were citizens. Thought that was strange.
