I'm actually willing to spend up to $1500 on an AR style rifle. With that, what would I be looking at?
With that budget you would be looking at Colt, KAC, Noveske, Daniel Defense, Bravo Company, and a few others, but you don't need to if it is just a range toy.

You actually don't even need to go that high for some models of these brands except for KAC and Noveske. Not even sure you can get into a KAC for that little.

Describe how you intend to use it.

You mean you aren't going to be holding off the zombie hoards from your roof top?

As primarily a range toy, and a just in case HD rifle, the $500 models are fine. Just make sure you shoot it a lot so you know it won't shit the bed if you need it for HD, not just 25 rds then in the closet.

How you outfit it will have a lot to do with the price - railed handguard vs GI handguard, GI front sight vs low profile flip sights, GI gas block vs low profile gas block, etc, etc.

Research! What style of shooting you plan on doing. What grain projectiles do you plan on using the most. With that amount you may want more then one barrel. Are you thinking about optics?
You are going to get many opinions, but that doesn't mean it's right for you. So again I say research. there are many articles and videos on AR's, take advantage of them. There are also reviews on pretty much any platform you find.

IMO there is no better home defense weapon then a shotgun. I mean unless you have a living room larger than 50 yards, the shotgun is much more powerful and you don't need to be nearly as accurate.

Actually you have to be just as accurate with a shotgun as you do a carbine. Most spaces inside homes are 30' or less. Across the bed 6', across the room 12', down the hall 30'. At those distances the shotgun patter is the size of a golf ball to a soft ball. Its also more powerful. 8 .32 cal balls at 1200 fps are deadly and they can go thru many walls before stopping. The AR penetrates less. It also has better sights, lights and lasers. All which can help you deal with a threat.

Just out! Lights and lasers for shotguns! I understand your point, but nobody said you have to use buckshot. I do use buckshot, but then if it's my life in the mix, walls can be repaired. At my age I won't be having little ones to worry about in the next room. Even a softball is a lot bigger then .223.

I didn't want to be the one to point out the "spread" discrepancy, but will point out I have a surefire on my 590....

I got academy sports&outdoors to price match their S&W M&P15 Sport II down to the 429.99, they beat that that price by 5% and I walked away with a brand new Sport II for $442 including tax. I figured if I don't know much about rifles, might as well get a good entry level AR15 and learn as I go. Time to shop for ammo, and a boresnake.

    Great price!
I bought one some 6-7 years ago, paid about $1200.00 for it.
Of course, the "climate" was slightly different back then, lol.

You've done well. Get some decent ammo. Doesn't have to be the expensive stuff, just don't start off with steel cased ammo.

Have to agree with others, the M&P Sport II is an outstanding choice for first AR. You aren't giving up anything in quality by spending less and you'll have more money for ammo and more mags and accessories :)

Should be 1:9 twist. Just about any soft point deer hunting round would be good for SD.
For range time, whatever cheap 55grn you can find.
