Anyone have a good experience with a close quarter combat scope/sight?

Since you said it was for your first AR, I'm assuming you mean like a basic multipurpose optic for defensive purposes and range use. Max ranges? As in fixed red dot or magnified scopes. Can also use fixed red dot with flip to the side magnifier.
Being your first AR I'd suggest getting an adjustable 1-4x or 1-6x, or Vortex just came out with a very good 1-8x scope. Then you get the best of both worlds. Fixed 1x illuminated reticle for close range or can adjust to 8x for longer ranges, easily out to 600yds. Might want to start out with a more budget minded scope and play around with it to get a feel for what you like and don't like, then if you want can spend the money on an expensive one if you want. Being your first rifle tho, you probably aren't sure what you want. Even looking for quality used ones to try would be good.
For what it's worth, I've used nice high dollar ACOG, Aimpoint, Eotech setups in the military then as a govt contractor and they were very good no doubt and best of all were FREE :)
Now that I'm retired from all that, while I could afford it if I wanted to, for my purposes now I don't need or use any of those now.

Could just get a Colt OEM and customize it the way you want. There's not many ppl who like the standard A2 pistol grip or M4 handguards.

The SOCOM model comes with a Knights RAS and the medium contour M4A1 barrel. The most recent batch have 14.5" barrels with pinned flash hider and M203 mounting cuts on the barrel. Other than those features it's just like any other 6920.

My favorite range ammo is the 55gr Wolf Gold or PMC and Federal FMJ or green tip for defense.

FMJ and LAP ammo for defense?
    Why? Just curious

Just personal preference. Bad guys have been wearing vests lately. Ex: Chris Dorner, Dallas BLM cop killer, TX court house shooter, etc...

Roger that, valid reasons, good thought process. I generally have Hornady VMAX in the rifle but first spare mag has LAP.

A sledgehammer has Aton more energy than a .223. The round will do a ton of tissue damage, but the target will feel lesskick than the shooter.

There are a lot of good options out there and an AR can be had for under 400 dollars if you know where to look.. I have to echo what some others have said though... Starter AR... Smith and Wesson M and P 15 Sport 2 you can't go wrong.. and you can get them under 500 bucks.

I did, I grabbed a sport ii for 440, out the door including tax. I'm already thinking about replacing the handguard, it has little heat shielding and it looks like a piece of cheap plastic.

It's such a good rifle. Where did you get the sport at that price? I am interested in replacing my DB CCB15 with a M and P sport.. I already have the 22LR version.

The sport II is a good basic rifle, people tend to upgrade to a free float rail and change out the buttstock ang grip

Colt's 6920 is a solid AR. Period. But be aware of what your getting:
    • Chrome lined barrel.
    • 5.56 Nato chamber.
    • Carbine gas system.
    • Basic furniture.
I prefer a melonite treated barrel over chrome. Chrome adds to the barrel which can and usually affects accuracy. Melonite simple treats the barrel to make the steel harder and more corrosion resistant. So that melonite treated barrel may outlast Colts chrome barrel. I'm also not a fan of the Nato Chamber or a carbine gas system. I prefer a .223 Wylde chamber for better accuracy and mid length gas system for less wear and tear on the bolt.

But once again before all the Pony fans jump all over me, the 6920 is a solid AR. Just not for me.

This is the website that I asked academy sports and outdoors to price match to. They beat the 429.99 price tag by 5%, then after the state sales tax it ended up as 442$. It's still cheaper than buying online if you add in FFL transfer fees. I'm willing to bet if you wait a bit more, the price on these sport ii's might even dip below 400$ on sales.
