I want a new carry gun, especially since things will be cooling off soon and I'll be able to carry a larger gun. Right now, I'm carrying a Bersa Thunder Pro UC (specs below) and I like it. It's small, but I can still get a full grip on it. Holds 13+1 of 9mm, but I'm not a fan of the checkering on the plastic grips. It digs into my side pretty good and can get uncomfortable when I'm sitting for awhile.

There are two guns I'm really looking into. The FN 509 and the Sig P320 (specs below). Before anyone says it, I've already looked at Glock, not my thing. :p

Capacity wise and price wise, they are the same. Reliability wise, I've heard they are the same too. The FN is 2.5 oz lighter than the Sig, but that's not enough for me to consider it a deciding factor.

The FN and Sig are very close in size. The only real difference is that the Sig is about 0.6" longer than the FN. You get a 4" barrel with the FN, and a 4.7" barrel with the Sig. The Sig comes with night sights. and the FN comes with "luminescent" 3 dot sights.

Both are polymer, double action striker fire guns with similar trigger pull weights.

With the FN, the grips are relatively aggressive, but I don't think they would dig into my side like the sharp checkering on my Bersa does. The Sig's grips are not aggressive and only have some shallow texturing.

One more thing to add. I believe the Sig P320 is starting to be used by the Texas Highway Patrol. I'm wanting to become a trooper within a couple years, so it might be nice to already be familiar with the gun they're using now. That said, these two guns seem to be so similar that it might not matter much. I might have both by then anyway. If I could afford to buy them both right now, I probably would.

    What do you guys think?

For me it would come down to trigger feel and accessory support. All the FN's I have fired have had mushy triggers, no clean break. Haven't tried a Sig in a long time. Holster and sight options would have to be available as well.

The FN has some holster options. Not as many as I would like, but then again it just came out this year. The Sig, being the sidearm of the military, and numerous LEO agencies like the Texas Highway Patrol is more than likely going to have more holster options, and better aftermarket support in general.

I will have to get a hold of the two guns to get a feel for them. I'll stop by Academy and Gander Mountain this week and see if they have any in stock that I can fondle. :D

Something I forgot to mention that gives the Sig an edge over the FN. It is modular. I can buy a conversion kit for $300, and have a 40 S&W or a 357 Sig as either a full sized, compact, or sub compact gun. That is pretty appealing to me. I've been wanting a 357 Sig for awhile now. Maybe buy a compact 9mm and get a full sized 357 Sig kit? That would more or less cover all my conceal carry needs.

Only trouble is finding a P-320 since the trigger issue, many stores quit selling them until they are upgraded. Personally I still carry mine, I have never had AD as had been shown, although I have put in for the upgrade. Other than that I really like it, but then I haven't tried the FN 509 to really compare.

Buds has several in stock. The only one I had trouble finding in stock was the full sized 357 Sig model, but you can find the conversion kits for that easily. I'm not too concerned with the trigger issue. It's an issue that's unlikely to happen, especially since I don't throw my guns around. :p I will probably do the upgrade eventually if the gun doesn't already have it though.

Hows the trigger on yours, and how does it fit your hand? Guns like the 1911 and the Beretta 92 fit my hand very nicely, so if it's anything like that, I'd probably be pretty happy with the gun.

Of course I can't speak about everyone, but that was one of the reasons I bought it. I was able to shoot one before I bought it, and it felt like it was made for my hand and I really liked the trigger action, about 6 pounds but feels less and reset is short. At that time it had only been out for less than a year, so I had to search the area for the compact model.

I had both and when I say had, I mean I only have the P320 now. Now let me start by saying I am a fan of FN weapons. I really like the FNX series and do own an FNX45. Anyways, on to how I feel about the P320 and FN509.

Here is a break down by features and my opinions:

Grip: P320 has good grip texture. Grip angle is a little different than other guns. The grip is more round than a 1911 I would say. I have the nedium grip modules.
FN509 grip texture is very good also. Does not grip as well when hands are wet. Grip fits my hand great and is little more squared off than the P320.

Trigger: P320 trigger is different from all other striker guns I have used (Glock, M&P, FN, PPQ......). I have about 1400 rounds through it now and it really did not change much. Little take up, clean break and short reset.
FN509 I owned had a gritty trigger out of the box, but break and reset were nice. FN stiker guns are known to need a break in period for their triggers to get really good. I only put 300 rounds through mine and it was starting to get better. I han an FNS40 with over 1000 round through it and it had a great trigger.

Sights: P320 has the SigLite night sights. They are very good quiality and were spot on from factory.
FN509 had the "glow in dark" factory sights. I actually prefered these. I have always liked how FN factory sights have a bigger front dot.

Mags: P320 mags are pretty good. They are either made in Italy or US. I have had both and the Italy ones seem better quality, but never had an issue with either. They are metal and I like that.
FN509 mags are great quality and metal also. They are expensive though! O got in on the FN 3 free mag promo, so that helped.

Fit & Finish: P320 is well made for sure. It is simple to completely break down and I like that. Being able to take out the fire control group makes cleaning beyond easy! The grip modules flat out feel kind of cheap, but that is how it is designed I would say. It shows wear much faster than other plastic handguns. However, if the frame ever gets damaged, just buy a new one. The fire control group seems very well made as well as the slide.
FN509 seemed very high quality to me. It just looks "nicer" than the P320 overall.
Aftermarket: Holsters from mainstream companies seem more available for the P320. However, any kydex holster comapnies, like Black Rhino, On Your 6 and so on, can make then for the 509. Other than that I feel the P320 and FN509 are just right out of the box, so I really dont think any aftermarket parts are needed. As for sights, the FN509 takes sights that are made for Sigs, so you have plenty of options if wanting to change them.

Overall, I really like both weapons. In the end the P320 just worked best for me. I really like beaing able to take the FCG out for cleaning, I like how simple it is to completely break down the slide and I bought a subcompact xchange kit which I use for carry while on Army National guard duty. I will be honest, I have taken it out of service until the Sig upgrade is done. The FN509 is amazing as well. It is just to big for me to carry with the longer grip than the P320c. If a home gun only, or open carry weapon was what I needed then the FN509 may have won out. Then I would have got another FNS9 compact to carry since I could use the FN509 mags in it.

I did switch to Trijicon night sights on my P320, my old eyes can see the bright orange better on the forward sight.

The more I look at it, the more I want the P320. I'm still going to try to get my hands on it and the 509 before I put down any money, but if the P320 fits my hand well, it's a pretty safe bet that's what I'll go with.

I think what I'll end up doing is buying the P320 FDE 9mm compact and a full sized 357 Sig X change kit. I might even get a 40 S&W barrel eventually since it's the same size as the 357 barrel.

The P320 is great right out of the box, I even like the sights. Changed out the trigger with a APEX flat trigger, now it's great great. Down side is apex stopped selling them because of recall. I got a email to send mine in for a refund, but I politely told them the only way they would get my trigger is to come take it.

The Apex flat trigger is the one thing I did to my P320c. Really liked it at forst, but ended up going back to stock. I never returned mine either. Going to wait to see how the upgraded trigger feels.

Another reason I chose the P320 over the FN509 is it will for sure be around for a long time and parts and mags should not be hard to find thanks to the Army adopting a version and so many LE agencies adopting it.

    I have a Sig P320 FDE.
Things I like about my P320:
    1. It feels really good in my hand.
    2. It is well balanced when fully loaded.
    3. I like the trigger pull. It is much better than most other polymer firearms.
    4. I can shoot it very accurately. Big plus for a defense weapon.
Things I do not like about my P320:
    1. It ejects 9 out of 10 spent brass cases directly to the rear. The cases either land on the bill of my ball cap or on the top of my shooting glasses. This happens with various brands of factory 155 gr ammo.

Overall I give it a 9.5 out of 10, and I am not a big Sig fan overall.

I have a gun that does that. An old Beretta M1935. It ejects shells so that most of them land on your head. I plan on shooting mostly 125gr

The 509 just is bad all the way around to me.
It's heavy the texture is extreme. Hated the trigger and to me it feels like it's lacking something.
I don't know what. But I'll stick to what I own.
