May have received a fake email from equifax. Earlier this morning I signed up for their TrustedID Premier. The next step was to receive an email to verify it and complete the enrollment.

Just recd an email and when I clicked on the link it was asking me all of the same questions again as if I had never filed it out the first time.

Then I looked closely at the address of the email I received - it was
    no-reply@trustedid.com via amazonses.com

    amazonses.com - WTF???

Is this the same email address you guys are getting??

Just an FYI and not vouching for the validity of that address.

When I checked my status originally, they said I would not be contacted to sign up, only that I should revisit the site after a certain date if I chose to do so.
I signed up on their site earlier today. Was told I that within a few days I would receive an activation mail with a link to activate TrustedID Premier where I would create a password and further verify my ID. I did receive an email a few minutes ago but it just took me to what looks like the same page I already filled out and the email address was not equifax, it was what I posted above.

It's not really recommended that you sign up for their services anyways. You trust them not to screw up again? If you freeze your credit and watch your accounts like a hawk, then you're going to do a better job than they would anyways. Also, if you do end up incurring real damages due to their breech then you'll have to jump through their arbitration hoops.

For one, they've already lost the PII of 143M people. How much more damage can they do?

Secondly, using any of their offered services will have no impact on future civil litigation against Equifax. That rumor has already been laid to rest.

They won't have to close shop, I expect it will be done for them. Too many of their executives are fleeing the company like rats off a sinking ship...

They'll probably just do a really shitty job; like how their system failed to give me a PIN when I did the credit freeze with them.

Those credit monitoring services don't really do a whole heck of a lot anyways. Might as well sign up for the one from credit karma or similar. USAA has a free one as well.

Not correct. The arbitration only applies to use of the monitoring service. It does not apply to damages from the breach. This is covered in the FAQ's.

Except their farkin's website did not work the two days I tried it.
Got tired of getting 3/4 through the process and getting bucked off ... time after time.
Wasted way more than $10 worth of fishing time ... :(

Must be a personal problem.

I had no issues or delays.

Well this is fun (not). Experian would not let me freeze my credit online, no reason given, but must submit in writing. Any ideas?

Transunion offers both a free TrueIdenty and a $10 freeze - which are you opting for and why?

I did the “free” credit freeze at Transunion. My idea, at my age and status in life (retired, cars paid off, house paid off, etc.), is that I’ll just let them all stay frozen, unless or until I need them. And then I’ll only unlock what I need to and when I need to (which isn’t likely to be frequent). But of course, that CONOP won’t work for everyone.

I didn’t have that issue with Experian yesterday. I used the link I posted here and once I paid the ten bucks, it was a done deal. You might try calling them and seeing what they say over the phone.

I have my card set up for automatic payment for several places, so it's a real pain due to that.

What I've always done for any type of online payment is to use a feature offered by two of the credit cards I have. I realize most folks don't like them, but I've had them since the 80's and they work for me.

Citi offers something called virtual account numbers. BOA (used to be MBNA before BOA bought them out) has something called Shop safe.

Both are programs you log into and it will generate a new credit card number for you that will allow you to pick your own expiration date and even credit limit. Once used, that credit card number is used a a particular vendor, it cannot be used at any other vendor or it will be declined. That keeps the main account safe online.

Then once you establish a pattern, email or text alerts alert you to any purchases over a designated amount or any unusual purchases. BOA takes about 3 days to email me, or 3 days to send a text at 2 am so I don't get texts from them anymore. BOA will text my wife the same day for her card so I don't understand that.

Citi wins for fraud stuff for me. Any purchases with a physical card that don't meet my regular patterns get automatically denied and I immediately get a text asking if I just tried to make a purchase at XYZ company. If I reply with a 1 for yes, I can immediately swipe my card again and the transaction goes through. If I say no, I get a new credit card from them.

I've had my card declined a few times and when they tell me, I say let me respond to this text about a fraud alert just as my phone is going off. I reply and tell them to run it again and say it's just a fraud protection measure since this doesn't fit my purchase profile. Usually shocks the clerk that the card works on the second attempt. (plus I get 2% cash back)

I did the freeze via the free True Identity because it was free. Also, you can freeze/unfreeze online.

My Equifax TrustedID Premier came thru this morning and is now activated. I then requested a credit freeze there, site said takes up to 48 hours. One down 2 to go.

Going to set up Transunion's free TruIdentity next then try to figure out why Experian won't let me do a freeze online instead of jumping thru all the hoops of doing it by mail.

AustinN4, same identical experience I had with Equifax (also this morning); including the 48 hour notice thing. That concludes locking all of “the big three” for me. (Not sure what went wrong for you on Experian).

ETA: On one of them - and I think it may have been Experian - to get past their “Premier” offering, you had to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the screen. Also, Transunion has you jump through a few loops but it’ll work if you stick with it!

And this is why I haven't bothered. In my opinion, this is on them - not me. I didn't ask for them to collect and "report" on my credit, and the onus is not on me to protect their management of the information. If it ever gets bad, I have emergency reserves to live on, and a good attorney at the ready.
