That's pretty impressive. Typical 500s have a barrel that is threaded into the receiver and the barrel shroud is sleeved over the barrel. It's tensioned at the front by a barrel nut that compresses the shroud and tensions the barrel. I would guess this is either a squib or something else stuck in the forcing cone or rear of the barrel or maybe a frame with a fault or flaw in the metallurgy that resulted in the catastrophic failure.
The kid looks ok though. That's a real testament to how safe the guns are. Even when they fail they don't kill the operator.

I didn't think of a squib load with that caliber. I jumped to the thought of overload or bad metal in the frame.

By trying to watch it frame by frame it looked as if most the flash was coming out the sides leading me to think of an obstruction.

How in the hell could you not know you had a squib with one of those? Maybe your hand/wrist/arm didn't hurt after you shot it?

My guess is an out of time cylinder.

The S&W X frames are built like bank vaults. If your pulling the trigger or cocking the hammer the Cylinder is rolling. Once it rolls to fire the mechanism locks into place. I just pulled mine out of the safe and I can't make it go into battery without the cylinder properly indexed.

Yours is probably a well maintained firearm.
The revolver in the story who knows.
Look at the spark splatter in the photo. That backsplatter is from the bullet being shaved as it passes the cylinder gap. It doesn't take much on a round as powerful as the 500 to get things moving.
A squib stuck in the barrel would of bulged the barrel.

Yeah most ranges don’t maintain their rental fleet like they should

For as big and as bad as a full house 500 is the specials are pretty mild. Perhaps they were shooting specials and got a squib before they fired their first magnum.

Since this is a rental gun maybe they guy before them got the squib. Turned the gun in and the gun store didn't clear it before renting the gun back out.

Maybe they left part of a patch or debris in the bore.
