Well guys, it's finally finished. I acquired some property outside the city about 6 weeks ago, and I finally finished building my berm/shooting box yesterday. A lot of sweat involved, but it's done. 20'x10' with 100 yards right now (will be 300 in a few months). Dream come true for me.

Although not really my own, it is mine to use here. Now it's just a matter of keeping up on ammo. Welcome to the Club!

Congrats! when I was in Colorado, I had plenty of places to shoot on my property (didn't have to build berms, they were provided already)

I've got 20 acres here in Canton, but since it's so flat, I really need to build a berm like this to safely shoot here.

Like you, 100yd won't be too hard- 200yd may require a little clearing... 300yd is really my limit, and would be in pasture- not my first choice

That is real nice. I use to shoot off my back porch in North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Cant wait to procure some land so I can do the same as you did

I'm planning to do the same thing. I want to learn more about what legal or simple sensible requirements there are to keep accidental over-shot/misses from harming things down range. How much land is it generally considered a reasonable minimum for such an awesome project?

The laws are going to vary greatly depending on the jurisdiction, and how it's built depends on the topography of the land and what's behind it.

My previous property had a house on a hill, and also other steep hills (some almost 80ft high) that acted as berms... this property has one corner that's maybe 10' higher than where the house- so I want to use that as the backstop there are trees along the property, but can't depend on trees as a backstop- I have done some shooting here, just careful and was only 50 yards, with another 150 yards behind it that's on my property still.

I'm in rural Van Zandt county- not in the city of Canton... so there's no law against shooting here, I'm just legally responsible for every bullet and where it ends up.

    Good for you!
There is nothing like the feeling of owning land and building your own shooting range.
Its nice to be able to go down range whenever the heck you want.
One thing I've found is that I always have guys wanting to come out and shoot, but on work days when it comes time to mow, spray and repair, ..everyone is out of town!

Yeah, for the laws, generally outside of city limits, you need 10 acres or more (under that, the county can regulate the discharge of firearms). But you still cannot have any rounds leave your property line, and I think if you are close enough to a neighbor's house, they could try and cite you for a noise complaint (hence I have a few suppressors...).
Yeah, finding help to build box = hard.
Finding people who want to come shoot = a little easier! ha.
