A true S&W "collector" would not be interested in this firearm. While the Texas - DPS engraving is an interesting touch, it really does lower the "Collector Value" of this firearm.

I learned this early in my S&W collecting days. I bought a 6" M66 that was a Dallas Police Department commemorative issue firearm. I thought it was pretty cool, I had to almost give it away when I finally sold it.

A "true collector" wants a firearm that is as close to pristine condition as possible. They are looking for firearms that will increase in value as the years pass. This increase in value is due to the firearm's lack of any kind of external influence from use.

Generally commemorative firearms are not widely popular. It is a local interest item. Some guy in Ohio is probably not going to get all excited over a Texas DPS pistol.

That being said, if you like it, who cares what others think.

I suggest you take it out to the range and enjoy your new toy. You will make the polymers guys jealous.
It never fails when I take one of old S&W revolvers to the range, strangers drop over to see what I have. Especially, if it is one of my fire belching Model 29s. If it is an overcast day, that makes it even more impressive.

So you think the TX DPS marking lowers the value of the gun?

The engraving on the revolver is not actually any kind TX DPS marking, in the sense of being some sort of agency inventory stamp. DPSOA is a private fraternal/support organization for Texas DPS employees. This was a commemorative piece associated with that organization.

I had 2 of those, that I got in a trade, I got them from a guy who got them at the surplus auction. Yours seems to have seen a little less use then the 2 I got. I did not give much for them...
