Well, Gander Mountain went out of business nationwide.
Not just here, thus we can't blame the previous location as the culprit.
Did I buy a gun there??? Nope... too expensive. Cheapest gun they had was a Hi-Point C9 for $230 lol.

Cabelas prices are higher than Wal-Mart and Academy, but they are better than Gander Mountain prices. I really don't care who is in town, I just want some one here that could be a reliable source for firearm gear.

As I understood Gander Mtn, they were not closing ALL their stores, just the worst-selling ones. When the one here closed, I got it as I hardly ever saw many cars in its parking lot the 6 or so times I was there.

As for a "store to go to locally" Academy Sports is my first choice...doubt I'd even set foot in Cabelas (not enough of a desire, not because anything's wrong with them). When I lived in Colorado Springs, we had a Pass Pro right up the street...went there maybe 4 times and bought something twice. Like Cabelas, they have a huge selection of just about everything (more than most sporting good stores did), so that was the draw for me, not so much their prices.

But really...I can't imagine any MORE guns, ammo or other stuff I really NEED as I have WAY to much "guns, ammo and other stuff" already -- for one person, anyway. ;-)

But if I need more ammo for the few guns I still have, it's off to one of the 2 Academy Sports we have here in El Paso (usually the Sunland Park location as I live on the Westside). Can't complain about their ammo prices at all.

And then there's Walmart...not bad pricing on "generic" 9mm last time I checked ($9-10/box of 50)..but Academy Sports is almost the very same (their "Monarch" house-brand).

I suppose .22LR will NEVER go back to where it was availability-wise & price-wise...

I didn't know that. I thought all closed down.

    Yep... Me too.

Academy is ok, but I really got annoyed when they stopped selling semi-auto's to west Texans only because we are a border community. They singled us out for 2 years.. Thankfully that's over... for now.

    Blasphemy!!!

I'll say one thing for Gander Mountain prices (not REGULAR prices but their "closing the store" prices): When I went there during said closing process, they had plenty of guns still on the shelves...I saw 2 Sig-Sauer P238s on sale at a VERY nice price -- but I already had one I had gotten earlier @ Sports Academy a few months ago. IIRC those 2 Sigs @ Gander Mtn were better-priced than the P238 I had gotten there @ Academy (and also at a great price), as they weren't "Nitron" models but more expensive ones MSRP-wise ($519 for the "Academy Sports Exclusive" Nitron model is way under MSRP for a basic P238).

BEFORE they closed, however, I got an "'Outfitters" 511 Belt from them...but it was a bit overpriced. Still, glad I did because as they were closing -- the good stuff went first so the 511 belts were soon gone.

Yes, I am the only person I know of who keeps saying, "Yes you SURE CAN have too many guns and too much ammo." ;-)

As I get older, downsizing "stuff" is increasingly important, as I have TOO MUCH stuff of all sorts. I keep downsizing big-time EVERY time I move (about every 4 years and I rent an apt, not buy a house/condo -- YET) but still too much stuff! Just in guns/ammo -- and the 2 very heavy plate-steel RSCs ("gun safes") I have -- just moving the guns/ammo and (empty!) safes is a REAL chore. So lots of stuff is more of a burden to me as I can't move freely/easily as I could if I was more of a "minimalist." You don't need a whole lot of stuff to live well/comfortably...

If I end up getting my Class B motor-home in 2-3 years, then I'll HAVE to go minimalist, as there ain't much room in it, certainly NOT for one of my safes (the larger one) and certainly not for all the guns and many containers of ammo & web gear!

I don't mind keeping an off-site storage room, but it's a monthly expense that gets tiresome and I'm SUPPOSED to be saving money during my stay here in TX (ELP) -- not SPENDING it! ;-)

    Ozzman,

Gander Mtn Corporate had stated (in May, IIRC) that "All 126 Gander Mtn stores were closing" but then other information contradicted that saying NOT ALL stores were closing. Plus, you have Camping World buying Gander Mtn and keeping some of the stores (assuming the leases of 17 stores but may take on more if they were profitable) but also said probably half of all Gander Mtn stores likely would be closed.

But that was May...who knows what's up NOW? Are there some stores still open but under Camping World ownership or not? And if open, are they still named Gander Mtn or changed to Camping World?

I just know the one here in ELP is closed...they even sold the furniture/shelving/fixtures so there's NOTHING in there now except the floor, walls and ceiling.
