I'm considering getting a 22 lr conversion for my AR-15 but apparently need to know if it's gas impingement or piston. Even though I put the tinker toys for the lower together, the upper was already assembled (maybe next project when I get braver.) How can I tell which I have. The parts came from Palmetto State Armory.

Gas impegment has a tube that burns in two under full auto
    Piston doesn't . from my unerstanding I found a S&W piston
For my younger brother 2 years ago . they run ceaner no gases in bolt
area . If it's got a tube running unde barrell it's gas.

If you see a gas tube on top of the barrel, it's direct impingement. Also you can see the end of the tube protruding into the receiver about an inch, after you remove the bolt carrier group. 90% or more of the PSA AR 15 uppers are DI.

Pull the bolt carrier. Does it have a tube mounted on top of it or a solid block?
If it’s a tube it’s DI, Block is piston.

There’s an easier way to tell. Did you pay a shitload of money for the upper? If yes, it’s probably a piston. If not, it’s direct impingement.
Had wondered 'bout that. This was a bargain special kit so most likely DI.
    Tks

Strange, M 16's have been used for over 50 years now and been shot full auto a lot, just look at some old film strips from Vietnam I have not heard of gas tubes burning out. I do like the idea of a piston system though, and have built a few AR types using pistons and they are cleaner, How reliable they would be under combat use, I simply do not know.

I do not think a .22lr would produce enough gas to operate either a direct impingment or a piston system. All of the semi auto .22's I have seen are simply direct blowback. Not having seen a conversion for an AR, I would suspect a light weight probably aluminum bolt carrier and bolt( without locking lugs) and a lighter weight action spring. The .22 conversions I have for a Colt 1911 and also for a little Sig P938 9mm both replace the steel slide with an aluminum slide , use a lighter weight spring and do away with the tilting barrel lock up, and simply rely on direct blowback to operate.

AR .22 conversion do not care if gas or piston as you mention they are blow back devices. Some work great some need a tiny bit of slicking up but they will work in semi’s quite well. Pistons are a bit heavier than gas gun but no gas in face. If running a can=more gas in face. YMMV Ihave both and both do intended job.
