actually i was told 5(?) years ago as part of my high cholesterol blood tests i do a few times a year that i DO have "low T" but i never thought of it as a big deal. maybe it is. went walking for 30 minutes today, used my knee brace, was hurting for awhile after it came off so slathered it with aspercreme and pain went away. maybe i can walk again. the custom made $400 shoe inserts do a little good, not much.

HELP! i think. i am 66 and need to lose my gut. i hate it!! never had one b4. always been active and ran, walked, dug holes (raised on a farm) lifted weights etc etc. THEN in 2010 had lower back surgery that has been labeled as failed so i go to a pain clinlc. then in 2012 had knee surgery then shoulder surgery. but i could still walk, and did. then left foot started hurting on bottom. dr. said i have no fat left on bottom of feet to act as a cushion. dr. says i have prematurely worn everything out. have a treadmill at home i use when i can. knee brace helps. i honestly don't eat junk much. don't like sweets. drink maybe 3 beers a week. maybe 3 shots of jack and ginger ale at night to get to sleep. ice paks are my backs best friend. guess i'm gonna have to start eating like a bird to lose the gut? think i'm gonna start cutting every portion in half and see if i can live with that unless anyone has a better idea. oh, i'm 6'1' weigh 230.

I have now lost 60 lbs since Jan so I may have something to offer here.
I have not been on any fad diet or bought any special foods

First, I think you need to drop the alcohol. Lots of sugar and calories and you don't want that especially before bed.

Second, If you want to burn the belly fat off , I suggest that you start counting your calorie intake and limit yourself to 1800 a day. A good mix of fat, carbs and protien and don't eat after 7 pm if you can help it.

Third, this is important, you need to build muscle back that you have lost naturally. Muscle burns fat. If you can start with a resistance band or dumb bells at home and work your upper body at least. If you can do this twice a day, for about 15 mintues each, it will help and it also gets your metabolism reved up and your body can burn fat even while you sleep.

I lost 40 lbs just by doing the first two steps above. Then I lost another 20 by doing step 3 and also riding a mountian bike. I eat a somewhat low fat diet. Not much red meat unless its venison. I consume a little dairy not much and I eat lots of green veggies and very little bread that isn't whole grain

I just had a full blood panel ran last week and my doc cut my blood pressure meds down over half. Now I take only a 50 mg pill a day and he said maybe I can get off it totally soon. My cholestoral is 160, my Trigs are 80 and all other numbers are normal

    Good luck to you!

NO NO! you were SO CLOSE. my hero. then you went and said no more Jack. why didn't you just tell me to shoot myself and get it over with!
i think i am gonna limit it to one shot right b4 i turn off the lights. i am lots of times in pain due to the back surgery and the hootch does help me to drift off. its medecine dammit!
i do have a set of free weights and a bench and dumbbells etc but i tend to overdo it then wait for the recovery then overdo it again. i have always been competetive and "nothing can stop me" etc but i guess thats gonna have to change.
i'm with ya on the diet but the venisons been gone for months. time of year to restock.
    thanks for the story!

also, I tracked my calories for 2 weeks and didn't change anything.
Then I began to see the foods that were hurting me the most.
I was drinking 2 gallons of whole milk per week by myself

Once I saw the foods that were causing me the biggest issues, my brain just shut off the desire for them.
Will power was not a big part in my diet change at all.

    Cut the carbs.
My wife's on a keto diet (basically no carbs) and dropped 45lbs in 5 months. It's the only diet she can stick to...eats proteins and fats.

The two life-changing things that have improved my quality of life immensely:

    1. Developed celiac, once I got a proper diagnosis I dropped 7 inches around my waist, and 35lbs, in 5 weeks...without even trying. Just eliminated gluten. This also eliminates my snoring, sleep apnea, and a host of other health issues.

But I had a disorder, cutting gluten isn't a cure-all for folks who don't have an intolerance to it.

    2. Androgen to deal with low T.
Trust me, if you have low T, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. There are docs who specialize in this stuff.

Never take "you're just getting old" as an answer. I did for years and am grateful I sought other opinions.

    I'm going on 47 and I feel 30. Seriously.

I asked the Dr. abt Low-T. Mine was marginal. Then he listed off the things the medicine caused but the main thing was once you start on it you can't quit. The body quits producing and won't start back again.

Androgel is applied to the shoulders. Super easy.

Side effects for injectables are much more pronounced than topical. And can be identified easily with doctor supervision and regular bloodwork.

If your body is making less than the minimal amount, who cares if it stops making it and you're using a topical daily? It's not like your body will ever produce more than it is today - in fact, it will always produce less in the future than it does today.

Everyone is different, and i screwed the pooch in my bodybuilding days when I took injectable steroids.

My T levels were extremely low, and it took a while (via legal testosterone injections by my doc) just to get to a level where a topical could maintain normal levels.

I suggest going to a doc that specializes in men's health. If you have treatable low T, it truly is game changing.

well, I've been lifting with free weights for a month on and off. Seeing some changes and liking it.
I'm looking into doing it on a more serious level.
I got measured the other day and I'm at 27.8 % body fat. That's down from 32% about 4.5 months ago

I'd like to get down to about 20 and be more lean

The problem is, that I'm struggling to consume as much protein as they say I need to build muscle properly.
I'm 6'6"/264 so .8 grams per lb is 211 grams those are 844 calories alone

When I throw in the fat/carbs, I'm going way over 2000/day and I have been on a calorie budget of 1800 / day for months. That and exercise is how I lost 60 lbs.

Now I have to eat about 400 more calories a day in order to hit my protein goals.
I feel full all of the time.
I didn't even want to eat dinner tonight but ended up with a couple of scrambled eggs and some deer sausage.
    Eating is a chore now.

I used the well known Katch-McArdle formula to determine my BMR and TDEE

I knew my BMR was around 2000, but the math showed it to be 2244 so with my activity figured in, I am expending right at 3000 calories a day , according to the book Bigger Leaner Stronger and the formula in it.

I'm using the whey protein no problems with digestion. I might go with a casein protein next time just to try it.

I'm going with a 40 minute lifting routine every other day and I'm going to keep doing my mountain bike about 5 days a week for cardio.

Progressive overloading, nutrition, rest and hydration...

Gonna give this a 60-90 day trial run and see

Alcohol is bad to treat both pain and sleep. You are doing yourself no favors.

Google sleep hygiene. Just friendly advice.
