I have not looked at .22 rifles in a long time. I gave mine to my daughter when she turned 18 and moved off to university.

Holy Cow. Look at the awesome selection of .22's you can pick up any day of the week for under $200...

Several of these are "forever guns" you can pass on to your children and grandchildren as you grow older. Amazing what you can get nowadays for the price of two or three months' cell phone service.

Then you can get both! Keep an eye out for black Friday sales coming up. There is typically a Marlin or Savage .22 that goes on sale for $100. Then you can still pick up a Mav88 for under $200.
and then stare at them in your home, because you have no money for ammo...

I remember eating a lot of ramen noodles at that age...any gun would have been a luxury.

Yes, I would like to know about ammo... Is it going to cost a fortune? I don't have that much money saved up.
12Ga ammo cost ranges A LOT...
birdshot/trap loads are relatively cheap- 100rds for little more than $20 at Walmart.. but good defense loads (buckshot, slugs) can sometimes be around $1 per round, the best prices being around $0.44 per round

you will get way more practice with a .22lr starting at $0.05 per round

Mavericks are good, got a 20ga for $100, then a 12ga for $110. 25 heavy dove loads for $5. I probably have put a case through both, no problems. At short range (where you are defending yourself) the 20 dove load is fine. 12 ga is fine for crowd control if you were a LEO but will over penetrate with buckshot. The 88 20ga has a shorter barrel and 16" isn't made I think. Would I shoot an intruder with a 22LR? Not if something else is available. Yes, 22 will kill but it might take a few hours.

Consider where you are going to shoot this shotgun. A problem specific to shotguns is they are generally banned at most public indoor shooting ranges, and even some outdoor. I personally have to drive a LONG way to shoot my shotgun at a range. All of my local ranges, do not allow any shotgun. One range I found allows test firing only, 5 rounds max. I do not even bother.
Another problem for me personally with a pump 12-gauge is the recoil. After about 20-30 rounds my shoulder is screaming. The next day I am usually bruised and/or bloody. It is not what I would consider a "first timer friendly" firearm.

My first firearm was a Ruger 10/22. I liked it for what it was, and the aftermarket is huge. It's not going to take down a deer (probably), but it will teach you the basics of shooting and allow you to get familiar with something that won't leave your arm bruised and swollen. Ammo is cheap and you can shoot it almost anywhere.

Having said that, I did end up selling my 10/22 because I honestly just was not interested in rifles. To this day, I'm still much more interested in pistols. I have a few long guns, but mostly pistols. And if I were starting over, I might just go buy the pistol first. In which case, a M&P Shield 9mm is a great pistol and within your $300 limit typically. If I were to recommend anything else it would probably be a Beretta Nano 9mm as they are $225 after rebate.

EDIT - Forgot you were 18. Aside from private party sales, I guess the handguns are out.

Over 18 can legally purchase handguns and handgun ammo from a private party. Under 21 can NOT purchase from an FFL dealer. Texas trusts 18 year olds, the Feds don't.

Probably get a lot of flack for this but have a look at the Hi Point carbine. They're easy to learn to shoot, they shoot pistol calibre ammo, its a good home defense and range gun. And they're in your price range. Downside is they won't win any beauty contests.

Or, as many have said, there are plenty of .22 rifles put there :)

I think they are fine for a budget PCC. The ones I've shot were functioned fine with no accuracy issues, although a bit "clunky".
