Went to Sears today and noticed a sign in the tool department. Cashier was on the phone so I walked over to read it. 20% discount on regular price tools or 5% off sale price tools for military / veterans. Flashed my TXDL with the veteran stamp on it and that was good enough for my 20% today.

I do believe that's the biggest discount I've seen.

Home depot official policy is a vet card from the VA, I have had the cashier point me to the sign when I use my DL with the vet stamp on it. When I last went, which has been a few months they were instructed to not make an issue of it but point out the policy.

I got my VA card some 40 years after I got out. Not all vets have one.

I found out about this a while back. It's basically on online version of the base exchange. And from what I understand, it's strictly for active duty and retired/veteran personnel that just "launched" on 11 Nov.2017. I've registered an account with it, but, have yet to use it other than for a brief look around. No sales tax and free shipping on purchases over $49.00 when using the "Military Star card".

Sounded good. Signed up and was surprised to see that even with tax/shipping free, the prices for most sporting good items, are about the same locally or less with tax.

Fishing reel I was thinking about buying for guest use:
    $75 shipping/tax free.
Same reel: Amazon Prime w/tax.2 day shipping: $72.86
    WalMart w/tax (8.25%): $75.06

Yea, that's pretty much how it is on base as well. The prices aren't that great, but the products on hand can be different from what you find immediately off base.

Just surprised to see that one of the perks of serving your country has just about reached parity with civilian economy.

I know that times have changed, but shopping the exchanges years ago resulted in big savings for servicemen and their families versus buying on the economy.

Then again, I think my base pay when I was drafted in '66 was about $102/month.

Was married ... think that added about $6/month to the mix. ;)
And she got $90 of it sent to her.

I actually think it's the opposite. Since you can only discount something so much before you get down to actual cost, there's a floor as to how low something can be priced.

I think the civilian market has caught up to what the exchange used to offer, and in some cases surpassed it.

About the same thing I found. I signed up when it first became available (July IIRC) and about a week later was notified I had been selected to be a test shopper and could use the privileges immediately. I searched high and low on their site and couldn't find anything that had a good enough price to holler "buy me". Really haven't been back much.

You certainly might be on to something.
WalMart has certainly caused much of that in rural areas and middle America.

All three military exchanges are non-appropriated fund activity (NAF) of the Department of Defense, the exchange services fund 98% of their operating budgets (civilian employee salaries, inventory investments, utilities and capital investments for equipment, vehicles and facilities) from the sale of merchandise, food and services to customers.

This means almost all of their bills (to include merchandise buying) are paid ‘at the register’. Since there is very little house brand items that could drive higher income margins, the exchanges have to charge at least cost + cost of doing business.

For some items (liquor and gas, primarily) the exchanges survey the local market and attempt to be just below the market prices.

Places like Walmart and other discount/low cost chains will always beat the exchanges on price.

Where you find the savings is generally on name brand clothing.

The firearms are purchased through major distributors and must adhere to distributor pricing policies as well as help pay the bills at the register.

I haven't tried any of their optics, but their owner/CEO is prior military and LEO, they offer a lifetime warranty on their optics and also offer a 40% discount. (Like Vortex). I have plans to give one of their Mod 7's a shot after they come out with a 1-8, and maybe in the interim I'll try a magnifier, specs say it's got almo 3.5" of eye relief which is outstanding. But thought I'd mention them if anyone is looking for a good priced RDS with lifetime warrant. www.ritonusa.com

It was an interesting time but glad I am gone from it! Joined the Navy to keep from going to 'Nam but ended up running the rivers and working at Market Time for a year. Had some good friends there, found I was a big fan of the Marine Corps, they teach leadership and responsibility. I never went overseas on a ship.
Thanks for discount info, will use it!
