Finally got a reloading setup, something I've been threatening to do for years. A Hornady LnL classic deluxe. Initially I plan on starting with 300 blackout and .223. I have a bunch of used brass I've saved, but was thinking I might want to start out with new brass. Any tips tricks or gotchas to be aware of? Any and all suggestions welcome.

My advice would be have a buddy who reloads come by and go through the process with you. Not always an option though.

Otherwise, don't start with max loads and double check everything.

I would love that, the only friend that reloads moved away about a year ago... If anyone is in the Fort Worth area and would like to do some tutoring, I would really like that.

A bullet feed die is a nice thing to have. I use a single feed for 223. It's a die with a window in the side and a sliding funnel in the die bore. Makes setting tiny bullets so much easier. Drop a bullet in. Pull the handle.

I have the hornady lock n load. The primer part of the press sucks....and sucks bad. If any powder kernels spill from the powder drop. They'll get between the primer shuttle and the place where it's supposed to be. When you go to seat the primer. It'll be off center. Jacking the primer up. You'll see what I mean soon enough.

It's an awesome press but the primer assembly has to be kept extremely clean. Even then it won't give a good feel as to the primer seat. I use a RCBS hand primer. It's world's different. I stopped using the primer set up on the press.

    Things can get expensive.

    Gunz are icky.
    Welcome to your DOOM!
You will soon become a pack rat, hoarder, and trash digger.
You will find yourself finding a single piece of unpossible to buy brass and holding it close while whispering "My Precious".
Your Man Cave will soon resemble a WW2 army bunker with all manner of ammo cans, buckets, racks of junk, with small aisle trails thru the mess.
Run. Run now. While you still can.

    Lol. Yep

On the powder drop die that came with it. You have the hopper, the metal cylinder that go's inside the die and the die itself. Feel free to cut the loop end off a Glock bore brush rod. Chuck the brush rod in a drill. Smear some metal polish on the brush and polish the bore of the die.

The can of hornady spray. The case lube stuff. It's actually good stuff. You need to spray the press down. All bright areas. Shell plate too. It'll get rust pretty quick unless something is on it. The Rockford armory case lube works too. It'll also keep it from rusting. Plus they'll both lube the powder drop.

    Edit. Oops. Its 'Frankford Arsenal'.

I mentioned the gram scale in another thread.

After you reload whatever you reloaded. You need to weigh each and every round. It's a safety thing. Double charges happen. Then once you get into the groove and everything weighs pretty close. It's ok to quality check batches. Pick 10 out of 50. Weigh them but that's down the line on experience.

Before you put your new reloads to your firearm. Weigh every one. Without exception. If one turns up heavy. That's where the bullet hammer comes into play. Pull it apart, start over.

When measuring powder drop. Weigh three drops in secession. Pull all the dies except the powder drop. Cycle prepped and primed casings through the powder drop station. Dump the powder from the case to measure. Don't catch it in something else. Weigh each load dropped as if being completely reloaded. If and when you adjust it. Weigh again, dumped from the casing, a minimal of three more times. Rinse, repeat, and verified.

Key word on this is Saftey. It's easy to do but it sure can phuck something up.

I've been meaning to get into reloading as well. I'm still looking at and researching differt setups.

You're already screwed. Food for thought. You can manufacturer better ammo then a robot and it'll match the firearms barrel. Don't believe the ammo advertisements. It's more then possible to improve the round.

Enter Reloading or making them from New cases. Then its not reloaded. It's manufactured.
