I saw one of those today and didn't realize you could get one with ports already cut. Anybody have any experience or thoughts about them???

    I've got the 21C
It's louder and breathes fire like a dragon in low light
It has somewhat less muzzle rise over the standard slide

I have a 21C also and it is my favorite handgun. The ports do a great job of keeping muzzle flip down.

It does get extra dirty though.

I have a compensated Model 24. I find the chief value of the slots in the barrel is that they provide my front sight with a very nice, very even, very dark, totally non-reflective coating. For paper-punching on simple or blank targets, nothing produces a more useful sight picture.

I sincerely doubt I'd ever carry a ported pistol. At my age, my low-light vision is bad enough without having to deal with enhanced visibility of the muzzle flash.

I have 17C, 19C, and 20C. One of the 17C has been converted to full auto...the flash is rather impressive when viewed from the side during mag dumps. Oddly, the "V" shaped flash is rather less noticeable by the shooter when shooting pistol stages even at 3-5 rounds per target as fast as the gun will cycle (far faster than a shooter can make individual shots).

As a rather long time and fairly accomplished competition pistol shooter with a tendency to play in Open, as well as an instructor and range officer...I find the myth about "flash" ruining "vision" to be a story told by people who don't actually shoot very much. A stronger case can be made from shooting comp'ed or ported guns in "close retention" positions, but the same sort of high pressure gas venting from revolver's cylinder gap hasn't overly bothered people for a century or so in similar work. Personally, I think it is all what the shooter is used to dealing with. And as always, actual mileage may vary, not for the other use, keep out of children (unless they deserve it).

Excellent point. My low-light shooting experience is virtually non-existent. My bad experiences with muzzle flash tend to come from shooting pistols chambered for cartridges like (usually, for me) .308 Win in a 14" bbl., 7.62x39 from a 10" bbl, and .30-30 from a 9" bbl., cases where the muzzle flash can impact my vision even during the day. Thus, my experiences are either non-existent or inapplicable.

I need to find a place and time to shoot my 24 in the dark before I again say something unsupportable.

Really? Over the years, I've lost a lot of blood shooting N-frame S&W revolvers from rollover prone. Of course, that's from bullet shavings and not gas venting so perhaps here, too, my experience has led me astray.

Thanks for giving me things to ponder.

Ben, I hear you..shooting pistol silhouette using the Creedmoor with a Super Blawkhawk...lost a few good pairs of jeans getting that right. Looks stupid wearing a leather guard on that shin, but it worked. Shooting from close retention wasn't quite as bad with a wheelgun, but 44 magnum isn't usually the caliber of choice for that sort of social work.

And yes, the giant fireball out of the muzzle rather overshadows the porting on those barrels. And...wuss calibers like 9, 9x23, etc. are tame next to short 308s! Although my 12" 308 AR is a lot...dimmer...with a suppressor on it...

Ben sounds like your cylinder was out of time
Very much so. The M29 I have in mind was built in the 1970s when S&W quality was at its nadir. Being a kid and not knowing how badly their quality had slipped, I proceeded to feed it a steady diet of full-house Keith loads. After a few thousand rounds, I retired it after a match that left my left forearm caked in blood.

That's the thing about rollover prone - it's easy for fat guys to get into and very steady but it sticks that left arm right in the path of anything escaping from the cylinder gap.

Those were the days. IHMSA #4925L, here.

I used to get pissed at the guys who loaded 'em up with H335 (Damn, that was a shattering muzzle blast!) or SR4759 (No flash suppressant coating on the powder so even milder loads produced prodigious muzzle flash.). That led to some very interesting conversations with a suppressor manufacturer on the subject of testing powders for best performance though his suppressors.

But that's a story for another day.

Again, thanks for making me think.

When I was at my first duty station as a military security police, I had an shooting instructor who really taught alot on sight picture and alignment. I actually qualified with a 38 shooting part of the course inverted prone. Thats harder than it looks.

I only had one revolver that liked to spit lead though, it was a Ruger Single Six with the 22 Mag cylinder

I know why someone might like a big flash and reduced recoil. But all my pistols are purchased for personal defense in mind, so any thing "C" is just not for me.

I picked up an as new Glock 17 today. Everything it came with originally plus Tru-Dot night sights and soft trigger for $450. Now all I have to do is get it from my brother.
