Wow(!) an overall mammoth defense budget of $700! Imagine that... probably even exceeds Liechtenstein’s national defense budget!

After all, what’s a few Billion$ among friends?

The CMP has always been rather ‘tight-lipped’ with the information they put out (or rather, don’t put out) about this topic. They’ve had well over a year (maybe close to 2 years, now) to get prepared to handle this transaction. That includes getting their FFL, training repair armorers, prepping storage / distribution space, etc. What they haven’t announced yet - and probably won’t right up until the time they’re ready to fulfill orders - is the price (or rather, prices per grade of condition).

And I’ve always gotten a chuckle out of Congress putting any kind of ‘annual cap’ as to limit the numbers of pistols per year which can be sold. Keep in mind, this whole thing got started because of the criticism the government was spending so much money to store these old guns. So here, the gov’mint has the opportunity to get completely out of the M1911A1 storage business and what do they do?.... Slow roll the entire process! (Your government @ work!!). Of course 1911 “storage costs” will now just be replaced with Beretta storage costs, now that the Sig M17 is coming onboard!

    Gunz are icky.
Its all about "the government" keeping those 1911's OUT of the publics hands.
They DO NOT want us to have them.

I’m sure there has been (and probably will be) a significant element that opposes these pistols being transferred to private, civilian hands - they’d rather just see them cut up and/or melted down. But as the linked article said, even under Prez Obama, that provision was allowed to be retained in the DoD budget. (Of course, they knew they could control it by simply just not taking any action to do the transfers).

The last time I was in Anniston asking questions, the nice CMP folks told me that they would follow their same formula for prices (as they use with M1)...90% of market price. So...expect $1,800 Colt M1911A1 for at least the first batch, with less desirable makers like Ithaca going a bit less. And auctions for M1911, Springfield, and other oddballs.

Personally, I hope this drives the price down (at least for a while) since WW1/WW2 guns have been getting rather high lately.

None of these pistols will be the screaming deals that the DCM used to offer on Garands. My first was $175.

The current CMP is mandated to make a profit to cover their operating expenses and they will surely jack the price or do auctions for the rarer/nicer examples. Just as they did with the remaining Garands after taking the helm.

    Unknown at this point.
I have heard they will have to be shipped to an FFL for paperwork/background check/etc.
Doesn't that go counter to the cmp program? The garands etc were shipped to your door.

    A.
