Daughter claims he was "Smart". His behavior says otherwise.

"Reiss was gunned down inside his Polk City home. He had been shot four times in the head and once in the hand.

Gerjuan Jackson is an official FEMA contractor who met the victim last year while conducting a damage assessment weeks after Hurricane Irma"

FEMA's response: "Not our fault or problem".

Very sad. I don’t see how FEMA could be considered at all responsible though. Of all the faults they have the actions of POS former contractors are just that, actions of a POS former contractor.

excerpt from article: "Using surveillance images and other investigative techniques, detectives were able to track the suspects from Polk City to Mobile, Alabama."

"other investigative techniques" = AKA - tracked their cell-phones and/or On-Star positions from vehicle.........., morons

Like I have always said - cell-phones make ya stupid.

Looks like the second guy who was shot, has also died (per a follow up article). Obviously in hindsight, not a very good choice of clientele to have sold guns to! Agree, associating FEMA’s name in the article’s title is mostly just a clickbate thing.

Yep. Would be far more interested in if the contractor who hired the guy followed contract requirements, background check requirements, etc.

If requirements are found lacking for contractors and they guy wouldn't have passed at the time, then FEMA has some issues. If there is a background check requirement andnitnwasnt don't by the contractor, it's on the contractor.

If the guy passed a background check, then I don't see how his actions are the responsibility of other parties.

Also implies that the dirt bag was currently employeed by FEMA contractor which doesn't appear to be the case.

    Hope they get needles.

I’m guessing there’s no “deep pockets” to be found by either victim’s family. I suppose if the Contractor who hired the guy was required to have some kind of insurance bond, then *maybe* the families will be compensated to some extent. Otherwise the Contractor will just declare bankruptcy, go belly up and open a new FEMA contracting business, under a new name.

Only if they are found negligent.

My hope is that he passed a background check when hired. Not to prevent the family from collecting damages, but because I'd prefer the contractors are doing background checks on the people they are hiring.

If they company was negligent in their hiring process or violated hiring requirements set by FEMA, they should probably pay. Of course, it seems there was a case some time back regarding a vacuum salesman who was hired w/o checks and the company was found to not be liable for his actions. Of course, vacuum companies aren't or shouldn't be held to the same standards are our government should be held to.

In any case, the guy with the “gun collection” wasn’t too bright advertising his firearm collection to a stranger. Over the years, how many ‘warnings’ do you receive about letting ANY outside contractor know too much about your business?

I wonder why two hand guns were sold to the the youngest perpetrator? Don’t you have to be 21 years old? I would not have sold any firearms to this person for any reason (parental instincts). This might put me in the bigot category, but this person does not strike me as being a legitimate gun owner like you find on these gun forums. Just first impressions and a short conversation with this person would have likely sent a few red flags up.

“During this time, Jackson learned Reiss had a large collection of guns and would sell firearms frequently. Two weeks after they met, Jackson purchased two handguns from Reiss’ collection worth an estimated $800.”

    A sad story no doubt.

Age limit is by state; in Alabama, it’s 21 for a handgun but in Florida, it’s 18 years old. I’d say Mr. Reiss just saw an opportunity to turn a couple hundred dollars quick profit. Of course, due to his poor decision, it ultimately cost him a lot more!

The knowledge of the collection may have been passed in the assessment of damages for claims.

As others have noted, the 21 years of age rule is federal and only applicable to the selling of handguns by FFL holders. Private transaction are regulated at the state level and vary.

FEMA (Felons Enjoying Many Activities). This posse looks more like punks someone would select for a ‘Drive By’.

    In the woods...
And I was just reevaluating my practice of carrying in my own home - thinking I might be a bit paranoid. My conversation with myself sounded kind of like this: "Dude, you don't need a gun with you while you are watching tv or sitting on the toilet!". "Oh, yes, I do! Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean there isn't someone out to get me!"
