I recently moved to Frisco (from out of state) and was surprised to find out that there are not that many long ranges (200 yds) around here. I was wondering if anybody knew of any good long ranges or undeveloped areas near to Frisco where one can shoot. Everything that I find on Google is over an hour + drive away from here. Thanks.

If there is any public land near you go out and make a shooting range legally can’t say anything to you.

Ever been to Davy Crockett national forest. Setup backstops and shoot down high line runs.

Sounds like you found the one place. And even then there are most likely rules regarding what can be built and any changes you make to te natura landscape.

Most of what people consider public land in Texas has restriction on what can be shot. Rules vary by location and almost all restrict centerfire rifles.

Telling someone to simply find some public land and start blasting because "they can't say anything to you legally" is a good way to get them in deep shit.

One considering public hunting grounds. Why wouldn’t you be able to shoot centerfire if it is illegal to kill tagged game with rim fire? A pile of dirt is natural. You aren’t charging anyone one to shoot there. I see where you’re coming from. But look where I’m coming from backwoods east Tx where you have several miles between the next nearest house.

I don't know how distance between houses is relevant. I have 2 ranges on my property and houses half that distance.

Why is centerfire rifle illegal? You'd have to ask the people that made the rules.

On the dirt mounds. Natural dirt mounds are natural. Man made berms are not. Rules may vary by location. They tend to not like many changes of any kind to the natural habitat.

Houses being referenced for others people safety. If a tree falls in the woods and no one hears it does it make a sound. Is what I’m getting at I guess.

Fossil Pointe in Decatur, Tx is the closest 200 yard range. $18/day for pistol and rifle. Around 50 miles from Frisco, at least from my part of Frisco near Hwy 380. But nice drive in the country.

YMMV, 200 yards ain't long range as most big game rifles are zeroed this range, (there's an 800 yard range off my back porch here on the farm and a private 1200 yd. down in Lufkin, 30 min away, sorry neither close to where the OP is located).

FWIW - DCNatForest/Kennard, Tx is quite a ways from Frisco......

I have not shot here but I understand they have 300&400 yard lanes.

I'm going to have to visit them. I've got a lot of FMJ ammo that I never shoot since usually not allowed. Per there website:

What Distance is available? Up to 25 yards for pistol and 50, 100, 300 and 400 yard for Rifle, 300 and 400 require you to pass a qualification test and cost $5 in addition to the regular lane fee.

FMJ allowed? Yes, Full Metal Jacket ammo is allowed on all ranges and up to 50 BMG for the 50 and 100, nothing larger than 30 caliber rifles allowed on the 300 and 400 as these are steel targets

Most people don't realize that there are several private 1000 yard ranges in the state. They're generally only open to friends and for one or two matches per year, but they exist.

There is a private range just south of Lake Ray Hubbard. It is called the Lonestar Gun Club.
    LoneStar Gun Club <sales@lonestargunclub.com>
Their membership is relatively inexpensive. They have an archery range, pistol ranges, shotgun ranges, and a 200 and 600 yard rifle range.

They even have a club house with a retail gun shop. They also regularly host club events.
The Frisco Gun Club has a 50 yard indoor range.

The land values in the Frisco area prohibit any type of large outdoor range scenario. If you could find a piece of unincorporated area and started shooting, the police will quickly appear and explain the error of your ways. A word to the wise...
