I'll refrain from telling stories but I would like to note that he left behind 3 great kids. A man couldn't ask for a better legacy.

    I'd like a story.
I met Deena, his daughter, when she was 16 or so. I was the coordinator for what I believe was her first Olympic trials match. It was odd to see that much raw talent in a kid. She had a problem, though. She was so drop-dead gorgeous that she was having problems deciding if she should try to be a model or pursue her shooting. Her focus was split.

It was crazy to watch her and her dad shoot at different times. He had the experience and shot better scores. She, otoh, did not yet have the mental game mastered but was still constantly giving her dad a real race. IOW, when you weighed up the situation you knew she was a better shot than her dad...or at least had the potential to be. (You can do some searching on the internet and probably find stories about times she and her dad competed directly. They'd be worth a read.)

The aforesaid distractions as well as life, education, (later) marriage, etc. got in the way and it was many years before she made the U.S. Olympic Team. Through it all, her dad supported her in anything she wanted to do.

How great and loving must a father be to stick by his girl through all that? He never pushed too hard, driving her away from shooting. He always maintained faith that she'd accomplish great things. As much as it might have been good for the historic medal count for the United States, he didn't try to force her to live a life he planned. He didn't force her to do nothing but shoot, go to the Olympics, and rack up medals.

But he wasn't just a skilled coach and father. The thing that impressed me the most is that Lones Wigger, a supremely skilled shooter and incredibly competitive person, was never prouder than when his daughter outshot him.

That speaks volumes about his love for her and his personal integrity. Is there a better compliment to pay a father? I can't think of one.

In this day and age where many dad’s and mom’s push their kids to live out the parents dream, it is pretty special to see a man who could have done that, but let his daughter pursue her own passions. A lot to be learned in this story.
    Thx

No I second that, I love Ben's stories. His sister should get an account and have her own section so we can read all of her stories.
This thread isn't really the place but open a private conversation with me and I'll explain why she's not on here.

I was a kid growing up in Montana when Lones Wigger was not just going to the Olympics, but winning medals. Can't tell you how proud it made us feel to have a native Montanan be so successful. And a really class guy too. RIP Lones Wigger.
