Why, might I ask? I carry my Defender regularly.

The front strap was worn so smooth I no longer get a good tight grip with it. I sent it to Novaks (who milled and put sights on it years ago, it was the first year Defender with a staked front sight and the minimal GI rear sight) to have the front strap checkered. They called me and told me there wasn't enough meat on the front strap to checker it. I got the New Agent in on a trade and it had Novak sights and striations on the front strap. I can grip it better, the same size pistol with familiar sights, so I just kept it. I am going to qualify with it the first week in Feb for another Instructor course I am taking. The Defender was always 100% reliable and and a joy to shoot, but getting into my 60's now, my grip has become more important to me...

I had this exact model a few years ago and enjoyed it for awhile. I think it was $800 brand new but you can get a fancier one for more money.

This is the Pimp Daddy Gun.
Hands down my favorite 1911 to shoot. Many forum members have shot it.

This is the 2nd fave. It is a stock Commander. Only thing changed was the grips. Ran perfect right out of the box.
    Both guns are 9x19mm.

The people who recommended other brands are not wrong. There are several brands - including Colt, STI, etc - that produce good, high-end 1911s. Shooting a quality 1911 for the first time is an amazing experience - and often a very addicting one. The low-end Colts are pretty mediocre and, in my opinion, not as good $ for $ as what you'd get from Springfield, STI, or Sig. I had one and it became a project gun. By the time I fixed all of it's problems, I had spent enough that I could have purchased a far better 1911.

With Colt you pay a premium for the brand.

I agree with TJ, there are better 1911's for the money. But some folks just want the Colt for the mystique.

I recently read a gun magazine article about that very issue. The article claimed that the majority of new 1911A1s being sold these days are 9mm models.
If I remember the early history of the 1911, John Browning originally designed the 1911 to fire a smaller caliber round. The Army demanded the 1911 fire the 45 ACP, if they were to adopt it. Thus the original 1911s were made in 45 ACP caliber. Confrontations with the Moros in the Philippines brought that about.

Time changes. Things change. I have been a die hard 1911 guy since my Army days back in 1968 when I first experienced the weapon.

These days, I don't care if it is a 38 Super, 9mm, 357 mag, 10mm or 45 ACP. If it looks like a 1911A1 and it shoots like a 1911A1, that is good enough for me!!

I want and only want a Colt......

......Dad carried one for decades. The question begs:

    - which model?

That doesn't narrow it down much. What do you want it for? Just to have? To shoot at the range all the time? To carry on a daily basis? To have one like your dad carried?

If a Colt is your first 1911 you will not be disappointed.

A reason some guys get turned off from 1911’s is when they buy some low end model or even worse, some POS throw together parts gun put together by some hack.

Thirty some odd years ago I thought my first 1911, a 70 series Gold Cup was the sweetest thing on earth. It seemed to hit everything that I pointed at.

Then, I won a Wilson Combat from American Handgunner magazine. That sumbitch made a monkey out of that Colt. I have not fired that Gold Cup in over 30 years now. I’ve bought many, many more 1911’s since then, most are superior to the Colt. But will I ever sell that Gold Cup?

    HELL NO!

Everyone needs at least one Colt 1911.
