So you actually bruised yourself when you were trying out the mag release way she is describing?

Let me restate what I've already said once before: - First response/post : "Barring that option, the video you provided seems to be a decent option. It would take quite a bit of practice to get the placement, timing and rhythm down to make it work well. I'm also seeing the real possibility of bruising involved in this if you are in a hurry and miss. And I'm curious as to how well this would work in rainy, wet weather. Or when it's so hot outside that Everything is a sweaty mess. - Second response/post:"Slapping pointed fingers into the webbing between your fingers or at the base of the knuckles. Can't remember what I was doing years ago but, I've had my hands bruised in that area and it didn't really tickle much. Kinda sore and stiff too."

Look, if you want a pissin' contest, I've no problem with that. IF you would prefer to carry on a reasonable discussion in another member's thread, I've no problem with that either. Real simple, if it can happen, it will happen. Maybe not to her, or to you, but, it will happen to somebody. And where did I ever once state doing this exercise?

So on that paddle release lever, what do you use to depress it? Strong hand thumb? Looks too far forward for that.
Different folks do it differently. Some use their strong hand thumb. Some use their strong hand trigger finger. Some use their strong hand middle finger. Some use their strong hand trigger finger AND strong hand thumb at the same time--one on each side of the flapper. Kinda like Southern Comfort--"Whatever's Comfortable".

So, I have practiced this strategy. It’s ok.

Will, for the match, tape the first sections (like the sections closest attached to the hand, not fingertips!) of left hand first and second fingers to prevent skin pinching, becuase that’s a real possibility.

Signed up for a USPSA match tomorrow at Area 59. So we will see.

    Glad it's working for you.
Since you are taping yourself, does that mean you have hurt yourself doing it this way?

Nope. Purely preventive. I see the potential for pinching that sensitive skin during practice and don’t want to get pinched. I was very careful during practice, but that’s not heat of the moment. I think taping the fingers will make me not have to be so careful during the match.

In a real life scenario I’ll have to suck it up buttercup. But really, am I very likely to be in a dramatic situation where I don’t have my own pistol and have to change mags to the point where a skin pinch is gonna be crucial?

One thing that my Girl and A Gun leader (NRA instructor) said was that if I was gonna do it that way, then I need to change my OTHER carry pistol (my 26 that’s had the button switched over for me) to where they are all the same.

I’m not gonna do that. I think I can figure it out. It’s good to know how to use different options anyways, as long as I don’t let the variance get me hung up.

I had my PPQ M2 switched over to the right side at the time of purchase, but I've been second guessing that due to the fact that all of my EDC guns have the release on the regular side.

    Whooooooooooooo!
At the match (using this strategy): It’s going great. :D
Just need to practice more making sure I get my trigger finger out of the guard when I’m changing mags.

    This is definitely progress.

What's wrong with an AMERICAN made pistol like a Ruger SR-9c? They have ambi safetys and mag releases. My full size SR-40 runs like a Swiss watch! LoL! Pun intended!

What’s wrong with it is that I have what I have, and am not in the market for spending money on another competition pistol lol.

Any thought for another pistol approptiate for competition also has to get in line behind three other firearm purchases that I DO want to make someday soon.

I’ve only said the same thing about five different ways in this thread lol.

Otherwise, the thread could have just been called ‘help Diva select a new competition pistol with her awesome healthy bank account.’

Here is one of the stages today where I’m standing still so the mag release is pretty clear to see. It’s at about 27 seconds.

You can also see how I’ve taped my fingers at the beginning.

I seem to be comfortable with it.

As far as my general shooting... I’m pleased to say I’m getting better. Still have a good way to go.

So... upon further reflection after Sunday’s match, plus dry fire practice, I have some thoughts on how to proceed further.

I got feedback on my first stage I shot that I needed to make sure my trigger finger gets out of the trigger guard when I’m changing magazines.

I hadn’t focused on that part during dry fire, but now I will. In doing so, it seems the trigger finger, when properly pointed out and up from the guard like a good little soldier, will be out of the line of fire for being at risk of accidental pinching by the pointer finger of the right hand that’s trying to depress the mag button.

That just leaves the middle finger. Which I’m still going to tape for classes and matches.

So my next task is to dry fire with my “tap rack training devices” inserted into the mags and really focus on getting that trigger finger out of the guard at that moment.

I have another opportunity to try this with live fire during my women’s class at Pearland Shooting Club on Saturday. We are focusing on fundamentals, so this will be another chance to improve muscle memory with this.

If only there was some technological setup that forces you to take your finger out of the trigger guard to release the magazine ;)
