Hunters on the east side of Houston raised Hell about that poison a few months back. We use the hog meat to feed our families. Worse yet, that poison gets into the food chain and poisons other animals.

    Bad plan!

you guys need to read the article OP posted

It is talking about the nitrate based product not the warafin

Apparently, the warafin was pulled after so many people objected to it and the nitrate based product is not being field tested.
The nitrate is like what you use to cure meats like sausage.
When eaten in lethal doses, they die sililar to carbon monoxide poisoning

One minor correction - the article says they are testing Sodium "nitrite" (NaNO2) and used "as stated" as a preservative in meats and such -whereas Sodium "nitrate" mentioned in post #6 above is chemically (NaNO3) and this, as most farmers know is used in fertilizers and explosives - close/similar but different compounds - but the end result is just as stated above, within a couple 3 hours pigs die, sounds good to me....

To you or I one extra oxygen atom probably don't mean much, but if it helps down swine - where do I get it?

ps - (hummm, just a thought here while re-reading my own comment, "explosives" - I wonder if about 30 pounds of tannerite strategically placed in a box w/ about 20# of 10-penny nails would work) I could pour a pile of corn on the ground around it, say 300 yards away and with one shot take out a whole sounder....pig shish-kabob...

:cowboy:yeehaw........., I might be on to whole hog eradication game here

note to self: don't forget to wear your plate vest grandpaw.... now where'd I put that old German helmet my uncle gave me as a kid?

Cool so they turn to sausage when shot, saving me a LOT of effort.

Please tell me that it also cures their bellies, turning them into bacon

I heard about this on the radio a couple weeks ago. It was said that the sodium nitrite compound poses to harm to other wildlife or anything that eats the meat because it just reduces oxygen in the hog's blood.
"The poison would be distributed through an enclosed trough that uses magnets, requiring 34 pounds of pressure to open. Bodenchuk said due to the weight of the lid, only an adult-sized feral hog could open it with its snout. He added that, unlike other poisons considered by Texas’ agriculture department, the compound tested by federal regulators does not pose a risk to other wildlife."

My hiskul chem teacher explained to me that 24D and 245T were hell on weeds but safe for humans. This was prior to the use of Agent Orange in Vietnam.

Yeah, because cattle, deer, horses, mountain lions, bears etc. could never lift 34 lbs. And the really good thing is that we know that traps work correctly 100% of the time and never get stuck open, stuck closed, never have any spillage or any other problems.
