Looks like we have a problem. We have developed a leak in a seal in one of the stern tubes. Looks like the cold water is affecting it. It isn't a serious threat to the ship but it needs to be fixed so we are heading into port. The expedition is pretty much over. There's no time to get it fixed and then come back down to resume operations. It's a bummer for the science party but hopefully what we did get will allow them to conduct their research.

Well, it is over from a science standpoint and that is a sour note. A lot of time is spent planning these expeditions. It can take years before one is approved and scheduled. Some scientists in this field base their careers off an expedition like this.

However, it is not over for the staff. We have to get repaired and then head back out for sea trials to determine if the repair is effective.

In about 5 months the ship will be dry docked for its 5 year inspection and refurbishment where the seals in the tubes are due to be replaced anyway.

Um, isn't it designed for cold water?!

Yes, but the seal is most likely damaged in my opinion. The other tube is sealed just fine. Cold water is making the shaft and seal surfaces shrink and (since it is probably faulty) it is leaking. At least that is what we are being told by the engineering folks.

They've got a temporary fix they are going to try in order to seal the leak until they can replace them in dry dock this August.

Probably not far off. While I don’t know exactly how the stern tubes work on the ship he’s on, I have a working knowledge of shaft seals in general. They can stop that shaft from spinning, inflate the back up shaft seal to prevent water intrusion, then open the side of the stern tube on the inside of the ship and put all kinds of crap in there to try and seal the leak. Then reverse the steps and stand there with fingers crossed when they restart that shaft and hope the leak is plugged, or at least sufficiently reduced so that the ship doesn’t take on water.
