I've been putting this off way too long. I've tried googling quite a few times, but haven't found anything solid. I think I've got the range part of the test down, but the knowledge/classroom area, I have no idea.

From what I understand is that you're taught in a classroom for X hours and then you test and then there is a range test. Knowing me, I will retain extremely little info the instructor/teacher tells me, in the classroom. I've been looking online for such information and haven't found anything solid. I even thought I could buy a book off amazon and well... I didn't find any. Maybe I was using the wrong searches.

Can anyone help me get a head start on the test?

    Thanks,

Can you retain information for about four hours? Like, pay attention for just a little bit?

All the questions are multiple choice and all but two questions I could have answered applying common sense and reason.

    Read LTC-16. http://www.dps.texas.gov/RSD/LTC/forms/index.htm

The test is not difficult so don't stress out in advance.

What they said. I have seen people that don't even know how to load a gun pass both written and shooting tests. It ain't that hard.

Many questions are common sense, read the questions carefully. I believe DPS has some sample questions you can answer.

Don’t worry about passing the test. What you need to worry about is that you understand Texas law and when you can and cannot legally use your firearm. I see so many people looking for the cheapest class they can find instead of looking for the best instructors. Your understanding of Texas law in regards to firearms could be the difference between a good shoot and going to prison.

I'm worried about the instructor talking about law and completely losing me. I managed to read some of the material, peter.brandon.733 linked. The parts I got to read, I understand. Hopefully I can read some of that law in LTC-16 and take the quiz that was also linked. It's a goal of my to get my CHL, but I'm not really sure where I would carry, since I pretty much only go to work and home. Would I carry to go get mail? Some 700ft from my house? hmm.... Hopefully I wont break that 11 year streak.

    Thanks, everyone.

Would I carry to go get mail?
    I do.

I was menaced by a stray dog last week while putting out the trash, a trip that's roughly the same as getting the mail. I had a trash can to put between me and the dog so it was a bit of a standoff. Then a neighbor drove by, saw what was happening, and used his SUV to charge at the dog, honk, and herd it down the road.

If that neighbor hadn't aided me, I would have been justified in shooting the dog. I strongly believe in carrying a gun to get the mail.

Hell yeah I carry when I get mail. Or bring the garbage away. Or step outside for a smoke. Or to work. Or while sitting on the couch playing XBox. Only time I don't carry is when I'm asleep. With a Walther on the nightstand on my side, and a Glock on the one on the other side.

You might pickup a copy of Massad Ayoobs book "concealed carry". It has very helpful info and various scenarios you might encounter in everyday life.

Nothing to stress about. Pay attn. It's all pretty useful info. At talking points the instructor will say "You might want to pay attn to this slide".

Oh, bring water and a snack.

    Where are you located at?
Hutto. A coworker of mine told me about the Thrall police cheif's CHL classes. Sadly I've done nothing productive this weekend. Lots of sleep and pointless internet stuffs. Found out my tax return might get me a CZ 9mm. Which? I still have to decide .
