Hey y'all. Looking for something I can take to the range, or plink with at my buddies farm land.

I'm open to it being a 9mm and I'd like to stay in the $400-$700 range, if possible.

    Thanks in advance!

Two I'd look at with your target budget are: Rock and Ruger. Ruger brings stainless to the party. Otherwise, they are the same gun made up differently. Obviously different companies, but they are very comparable pistols.

I've got 2 RIAs and both have run with no issues.

One is a .45, the other is a TCM/9mm combo.

My RIA 1911A1 CS is on it's 2nd trip back to Armscor for repair. Purchased brand new.

300 rounds fired in total and I've never gotten a clean magazine out of it. Never. Last casing in magazine jams every time, multiple magazines, multiple shooters. Absolutely destroys the brass casing, requires multi-tool to clear malfunction as magazine will not drop-free.

Their customer service is quick and polite, but that is the only positive I can say about Armscor/RIA thus far.

I've been very happy with my Rock Island GI 1911A1. I've never had a malfunction with it and, even though it's got those wee little GI style sights, it's nice and accurate. It has eaten everything I've fed it, ball and JHP. I don't have any experience with 9mm 1911's, but I can comfortably recommend this one in .45ACP. My only complaints are: The safety is a bit stiff when being engaged, and I wish they had put some texture on the grips - they're beautiful smooth walnut. I'll probably put some double diamonds on it at some point.

Just go down to your local gun store and pick out one you like that fits your budget. Pretty much all brands are going to be decent in that price range.

Well, except Taurus. I don't hear much bad about their 1911s but I still would never recommend them. Kind of my thing.

Get some quality mags for it. That is a weak spot for most entry level firearms.

My RIA 10mm 1911 functions flawlessly. There will always be a few lemons in a batch, humans aren't perfect. As long as it isn't Taurus you are good :)

Springfield Range Officer, the best bang-for-the-buck 1911 available at the moment. It is at the upper end of your price range, but well worth it even if you have to shell out a few additional bucks to get one!

Rock Islands are good, lower end guns if you are looking for something less expensive; and everyone I know who actually owns a Taurus PT1911 have had nothing but great things to say about them. It is one of Taurus' best models and while it may be fun to poke at them, most of the people who do so have never owned much less shot one!
