2 years to be clear. You're right 60 hours does not equate to 2 years, however, since you've pointed out I painted myself into a corner if you click through the states and read New York:

The educational requirement for New York police recruits include holding a high school diploma or GED equivalent, plus 60 college credits with a 2.0 GPA from an accredited college or university OR 2 years of full-time active military service in the United States Armed Forces with an honorable discharge and have a high school diploma or its equivalent.

So in that case 2 years active military service can substitute for the 60 hours you want to debate. In that case there may be many police officers in New York who used to be active duty military. The only way we'll know is if you research it I guess.

Recent former military here. Unless you are an armorer or a SNCO/Officer, you don't get a ton of trigger time with a pistol. I would also bet that the amount of police like encounters that happen in the military are few and far between, especially with a pistol. Not counting PMO or MPs of course. Now if vets want to be cops, I am all for it.

I just think its nonsense that people would think a military member or police officer are more qualified to carry then any old joe schmoe down the street. There are a ton of videos out there of police who passed these psych evals who ended up shooting someone they shouldn't have.

Holy crap. NY allows people with a 2.0 to be cops? That explains some of the stupid stuff we hear NY cops doing.

With a starting salary of $41,975 you're not going to get the best and brightest. Hell, a mailman makes more than that. Most starting Letter Carriers are making $60K+ a year with the OT they are forced to work. $42k a year in NYC is starvation wages.

Police officers are allowed to carry guns because they go through a PSYCH exam. Not just a background check. They also have a couple years of training........

My PSCH exam was <15 minutes.

No PD anywhere in the US requires a "couple years of training" before allowing an officer to carry a gun.

I am a Veteran and have handled guns most of my life, have DVM but don't consider my self ready for cop duty w/o training. I do believe we should be able to Conceal Carry.
My point here was to offer an opinion on shooting. I think that the local school board should have been able to post signage stating armed patrol on site. This could be fulfilled by ex-military with rifle in front of the school. This simple deterrant would have gave notice to this shooter and I don't believe he would have acted. This would be cost effective for any school. Sorry for misspelling but can't correct.

yeah and in NYC you can understand why so many of them take bribes. They probably have to just to feed themselves. I have a buddy that lives back up in Amarillo who used to be an NYC courtroom cop he served 30 years and retired. He told me the only place he saw a higher amount of corruption in police departments than NYC was Amarillo Texas. Which shocked the hell out of me.

I guess its easier to debate the time of training than it is to debate that I'm right about most civilians not having the same training as police officers.

The OP is arguing that all gun owners should have the same privileges as trained police officers. I'm just saying lets not demean the job of a police officer and make it seem like we're as qualified as they are because I have a gun or even a CHL. I have both and yet I know there is a level of difference between me and an officer.

At least I hope there is or what are we paying them for? If you're trying to debate whether cops should exist I think that's highjacking the thread.
I did not say "All, anything" don't put words in my mouth. I AM suggesting that there should be a path for all people to have the same freedom of movement with a weapon as any Police Officer has. I don't need to post my resume, but I am not speaking from ignorance. The difference is not that far between a citizen and a peace officer, ask me how I know, don't assume. 3 semesters at a junior college and 40 hours of refresher training every 2 years and a firearms proficiency test.

I don't hate cops, they are a useful tool to enforce laws in a civilized society. I am not naive either know they aren't every where, nor do I want them everywhere.

Also, the Supreme Court Ruled a long time ago that Public Safety officers have NO DUTY to save you if you are being victimized. That means, there is no penalty if they refuse to risk their lives in the safety of others. Will a cop be fired? Probably, because the leaders of these government organizations want to continue the myth that government is the solution to providing you safety. That is a lie that too many people are believing. Most cops want to help, but do they want to die to help?

There was one officer who came in because she knew she needed help. When she went to shoot she found out her Glock was rusted into a non-functional state. As many of you might know Portland is a wet place. This officer had not cleaned her firearm since her last qualification which was 15 months in the past. She believed that a Glock didn't need to be cleaned or lubed because it was a plastic gun.

Actually this is how "rumors" get started, by folks looking to bash a product - THIS GLOCK WAS NOT RUSTED. The "brass" cased ammunition in her magazine, because it had not been cycled in so long had corroded to the point the firearm failed to function. Not the pistol's fault here but the ammo.

Glocks don't rust, (save the old 1986 G17 I got that had a non-stainless SN# tab inserted in it to pass US import rules - which has been know to rust, but the Tenifer coating on the working parts prevents this condition described above from ever happening and after the initial importing all Glocks have a stainless SN# tab so even that is non-issue in current Glocks)

There was no implication in that story against the hardware. It was the operator's fault for not maintaining their equipment. For instance, I take my EDC apart every month or so just to blow the pocket lint off it ;)

That 60 credit hours is not a requirement to be a police officer in Texas. It is a requirement for some specific cities, counties, and is for DPS.

Hmm... I was there when the Glock was broken down. It was rust. Bright red rust.

Seems there's lots of rusty Glocks out there.
